Dear Colleague,
Celia Kaye, MD, PhD, senior associate dean for education, has announced that she will be leaving her position at the end of December. She will also be leaving her position as medical director of the Child Health Associate/Physician Assistant (CHA/PA) program. Celia officially retired in August, but at my request, she stayed on in a part-time capacity. Now, she says she’s really leaving. Her full retirement is well earned. She has been a tremendous leader and friend and we will miss her greatly. Since joining the School of Medicine in 2005, she has served two tours as senior associate dean for education, from 2005 to 2007 and from 2010 until now. In this role, she shepherded a new medical school curriculum and coordinated planning for our new branch in Colorado Springs. Her dedication and compassion are an inspiration. We will conduct an internal search for an interim replacement. Chip Ridgway, senior associate dean for academic affairs, will chair the search committee. It is a half-time (0.5FTE) position.
I recently received a friendly invitation from Tom Califf, a second-year MD student, to grow a moustache during the month of November in support of a cause to raise awareness for men’s health issues like prostate cancer. Tom says the “Movember” campaign will be marked by several events including a “Shave the Date” on Nov. 1, when the already mustachioed will be shaved so that everyone starts with a clean upper lip. I really like the originality of the promotion and I offer my best wishes for success, but in spite of significant pressure from Tom to participate, I value my marriage more and will not be growing a moustache (ever).
I spent two days at UCLA last week on a site visit for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program. Every time I do one of these events, I am more impressed by the caliber of the individuals who have been accepted into and trained by this program.
Since I had to be in LA, I missed the Faculty Senate meeting last Tuesday, but I have heard that there was a terrific discussion of the new Faculty Professionalism Code. The Executive Committee will get a report of this discussion tomorrow, along with several other items.
Last Friday, Joel Hirschhorn, MD, PhD, gave the 27th Annual Joseph W. St. Geme, Jr., MD Lecture and, as has been the custom for the last several years, a medical student was honored for research excellence. Justine Migdall-Wilson, PhD, was this year’s recipient of the Joseph W. St. Geme, Jr., MD Award for Outstanding Research by a Medical Student. Justine is currently in her fourth year of medical school, having received her PhD in 2012. Congratulations!
Last week, I mentioned that Chancellor Emeritus James Shore, MD, died in late September and memorial details were pending. His family has scheduled a memorial and celebration of Jim’s life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center, 650 15th St.
Have a good week,
