What's Going on Here?

March 4, 2013

Dear Colleague,

I received a letter this past week from The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) letting us know that our School of Medicine is in full compliance with accreditation standards on diversity, pipeline programs and partnerships. Chris Nyquist, MD, MSPH, Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, Regina Richards, MSW, Director of Diversity and Inclusion, and the entire UME team deserve credit for their hard work on these efforts. We remain fully accredited by the LCME and we will continue to work on other areas of concern raised by the LCME, including students’ debt load, the national issues of student mistreatment, timeliness of grading and our dearth of state funding.  The last of these is something that has been in every LCME letter to us for the 23 years I have been receiving them.  I am not particularly optimistic that we will make progress on that issue very soon.

The MD Office of Admissions has a familiar face assuming a new role. Ozzie Grenardo, MD, MBA, MHA has accepted the position of interim Associate Dean for Admissions. He will continue to serve as Director of Community Outreach and Admissions.

The School of Medicine and University of Colorado Hospital, and the School of Medicine and Childrens Hospital Colorado Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety Small Grants Programs are now accepting applications for one year of funding up to $25,000 for process-improvement projects aimed at improving patient safety, and/or enhancing the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care delivery.  Letters of intent must be received by Friday, April 5, and applicants must be SOM faculty or partnered with SOM faculty.  For full details, please contact Heather Hallman at heather.hallman@ucdenver.edu.

The Mentored Scholarly Activity Capstone presentations are coming Thursday, March 7, in the Health Sciences Library. Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD, Director of the Cancer Center, is the keynote speaker at 1 p.m. All faculty are encouraged to assist with judging. If you are interested, please complete the Capstone Call for Judges form. Details about the MSA program are available here.

Nanette Santoro, MD, and James McManaman, PhD, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, accepted an award last week from the March of Dimes honoring the University of Colorado for Excellence in Research.  The award, recognizing research in birth defects and premature birth, was given at a ceremony at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science last Monday.

Mark Boguniewicz, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Allergy-Immunology at National Jewish Health and University of Colorado School of Medicine, received the 2012 Distinguished Clinician Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

The next exhibit at the Fulginiti Pavilion Gallery is Four Questions by artist Judy Chicago and her husband, photographer Donald Woodman, opening on Thursday, March 7.  Four Questions focuses on the relationship of scientific and medical technologies to the moral and ethical dimensions of life.  The work is connected to her earlier Holocaust Project.  The artists will discuss their work beginning at 4 p.m. and a reception will follow at 5 p.m.

And, finally, the only dinner of the week was the annual Health Professions Scholars Banquet Saturday night where the Colorado Area Health Education Centers program honored 17 students from health-professions programs throughout the state.  Three of our Child Health Associate\PA program students were recipients, as were four additional students from Dental Medicine (2), Nursing and Pharmacy from our campus. Congratulations to all of them.

Have a good week,
Richard D. Krugman, MD
Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and
Dean, School of Medicine
