A call for nominations is sent to all faculty, students, residents, and fellows in the Spring, which includes instructions for submitting nominations for the award. 

A committee made of the previous award recipients, faculty senate members, medical students, and GME trainees review the nominations. All winners are determined using a points system for Professionalism, as defined by SOM Rules and based on demonstrated:

• Civil and courteous behaviors;
• Respect for teachers, students, supporting staff and colleagues;
• Service to the community;
• Dedication to lifelong learning;
• Empathy, altruism, and compassion
