Dear colleague:
On Sunday, May 3, the UCHealth Eye Center and Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute celebrated the opening of its expanded center on the Anschutz Medical Campus with a reception, dinner and program that featured guest speakers Jeff George, global head of Alcon, and George Karl, former NBA Coach, who was named Coach of the Year in 2012-13 while leading the Denver Nuggets. The $30 million expansion increases the size of the center to 135,000 square feet and establishes it as one of the largest eye care facilities in the United States. The center treats more than 100,000 patients per year and now has its own diagnostic center and three operating rooms reserved for eye surgery. In addition, the center houses space for research.
The American Thoracic Society (ATS) International Conference will be in Denver this upcoming weekend and one of the highlights will be the Breathing for Life Award on Saturday, May 16, recognizing the School of Medicine’s Marvin Schwarz, MD, who is one of the world’s preeminent experts on pulmonary fibrosis. Marvin is the James C. Campbell Professor of Pulmonary Medicine in the Department of Medicine and he served from 1985 to 2004 as head of the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine and as director of the pulmonary fellowship training program from 1987 to 2010. As the ATS notes, his level of expertise has become an informal event at the ATS Fellows Case Conference, with many fellows and seasoned clinicians attempting, usually unsuccessfully, to “Stump Marvin Schwarz” with a difficult case. Congratulations to Marvin on this well-deserved award.
