Hand & Upper Extremity Surgical Fellowship

The department offers two ACGME-accredited fellowship positions in orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgery. The goals of the fellowship are to provide: (1) comprehensive training for the management of upper extremity conditions (hand, wrist, elbow) including evaluation, surgery, and rehabilitation; (2) a structured, interactive educational curriculum that includes weekly hand conference reviewing core hand surgery knowledge, weekly indications conference, twice-monthly anatomy and surgical skills labs, monthly journal club and research meetings; (3) opportunities for the advancement of our field through basic scientific and clinical research; (4) long-term mentorship and collegiality for our growing fellowship alumni.

The clinical strengths of our fellowship program are elevated by a diverse and experienced faculty that prioritizes education while providing the highest quality care to our patients. Our fellowship experience includes outstanding exposure to general hand surgery conditions, congenital/pediatric hand surgery, brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries, microsurgical limb reconstruction, acute upper limb trauma and the reconstruction of post-traumatic conditions, arthroscopy, sports injuries, and the reconstruction of arthritic conditions.

The structure of the fellowship emphasizes a mentorship model with two, 3-month rotations that are repeated to promote a graduated learning and responsibility experience over the academic year.

Duration: This is a one-year, post-graduate experience from August 1 - July 31.

The Fellow will gain expertise in the management of adult and pediatric hand and upper extremity conditions during clinical rotations at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center and affiliated practices, the Children’s Hospital Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, and Denver Health Medical Center.

Hand Surgery Fellows are expected to develop and to lead a research project worthy of publication or presentation. Extensive resources and world-class facilities are available on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one of the foremost research and surgical facilities in the country, located in the beautiful Denver Metro area.

Center for Surgical Innovation

Fellows participate in a structured, interactive educational curriculum that includes weekly hand conference reviewing core hand surgery knowledge, weekly indications conference, twice- monthly anatomy and surgical skills labs, monthly journal club and research meetings. The fellows are expected to participate in peer-learning opportunities, including appropriate instruction of residents and medical students during the year.

Hand Conferences Schedule

The stipend is commensurate with a University of Colorado School of Medicine PGY-6 salary.
