The University of Colorado’s Department of Family Medicine has supported Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) research since the 1970s when two regional networks started in the United States: The Family Medicine Information System in Colorado (FMIS) and the Cooperative Information Project (COOP).

Current PBRN research efforts began around 2004 are all organized under the umbrella of the State Network of Colorado Ambulatory Practices & Partners (SNOCAP).
