Fellows have the opportunity to work with David Howell, PhD, ATC who is the Lead Researcher with the Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado, Assistant Professor at CU Orthopedics, and mentor to the Sports Medicine fellows.
Because the fellowship is a one-year training program, we ask incoming fellows to think about a basic research question of interest with background literature to discuss with Dr. Howell prior to the July 1st start date. Dr. Howell and other selected mentors then work with each fellow individually to identify relevant, interesting, and feasible research projects that can be completed in one year. Shortly after the start of the fellowship Dr. Howell and the mentorship team will meet with the fellow to start regular “research check-ins” to identify the “nuts & bolts” of data collection/analysis/research process, and to construct a timeline for successful project completion. Fellows receive 1 half-day/week of dedicated time for scholarly research projects.
Over the last two years, our fellows’ scholarly projects have included several published articles along with podium presentations at both the local and national level; including an award for best resident/fellow research project in 2020!
Scholarly Activity Requirements:
- Fellows are required to lead one research/QI project during the academic year.
- Fellows are expected to present a minimum of one research /QI project at the AMSSM and/or ACSM Annual Conference.
- Additional research opportunities are available, if interested.
