Resident Benefits

Subject to enrollment and verification of eligibility, residents are eligible for a generous benefits package through the University of Colorado School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education Programs.

Please refer to the GME website for the most current information. 

Applications should include the following:

1. ERAS application
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), or “Dean's letter”
4. Medical school transcript
5. USMLE or COMLEX (Steps 1 and 2) transcript
6. Three letters of recommendation (at least one from a family physician)
7. A personal statement: Within your personal statement, you must include why our program is a good fit for you and your career goals. This may be added as a separate paragraph or integrated throughout your statement. This is a required component of the application. Personal statements that do not address this requirement will be returned for revision and considered incomplete until updated. Because interview invitations are based on completed application materials, priority for interview consideration will be given to applicants who have fulfilled this requirement. 

Application Criteria​

Thank you for considering applying to our program. Please review the following application criteria.

1. Specific USMLE or COMLEX scores are not required, but applicants who have passed all exams on their first attempt will be given preference.
2. We prefer that one of the three letters of recommendation be from a U.S. physician who has worked with you long enough to attest to your clinical skills. A letter from a U.S. family physician is strongly encouraged.
3. We give preference to International Medical Graduates who are ECFMG certified at the time of application.
4. We strongly encourage applicants to have at least one year of hands-on clinical experience in the U.S, defined as being paid to provide patient care as a physician or participating in a program where the applicant is providing direct patient care under supervision and performance is formally evaluated.
5. Applicants must have graduated from medical school within the past five years.
6. Applicants should not have a gap in providing patient care as a physician of more than two years since completing their medical education.
7. Residents in our program must be either a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or possess the appropriate documentation to allow the resident to legally train at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. At this time, our program cannot support residents with a visa. 
8. Please note: CU Anschutz strongly encourages vaccination against the COVID-19 virus and other vaccine preventable diseases. If you work in a healthcare facilities or clinics operated by our affiliated hospital or clinical partners or by CU Anschutz, you will be required to comply with the vaccination and medical surveillance policies of the facilities or clinics where you work.

Interview Process

The University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency conducts a holistic review of all applications and supporting materials. Interview invitations are expected to be sent on or around October 7, 2026. Additional invitations may be offered in November and December if interview slots become available. 

All interviews are conducted virtually through the Thalamus platform. Interviews are typically held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with occasional Monday interview dates, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Mountain Time between late October and December.

Applicants who receive an interview invitation are encouraged to schedule their interview promptly. If your preferred interview date is full, you may add yourself to the waitlist through Thalamus and will be notified if a slot becomes available. Interview invitations not acted upon within 48 hours may be released to another candidate, and the applicant may be moved to the waitlist.

Interviews for the University Hospital (UH) and Denver Health (DH) tracks are conducted concurrently. Applicants are responsible for updating their ERAS application if they wish to be considered for both tracks. Applicants must be designated for both tracks in ERAS to be ranked by both programs.

Interviewed applicants will also be invited to optional virtual events with program leadership and chief residents. In addition, we will host an optional, non-evaluative in-person site visit on February 2, 2027, to provide applicants with an opportunity to learn more about our program, training environment, and community. Participation in the site visit is entirely for the applicant's benefit and will not be considered in ranking decisions.
