Psychosocial Oncology - Medical Oncology

The University of Colorado Hospital (UCH)

The Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Medicine will offer a novel minor rotation in psychosocial oncology at Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. Please note this rotation differs from the psychosocial oncology rotation offered by the Division of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) team. In many ways the exposure and experiences are similar. However, the teams are separate and involve different training experiences and exposure to different patient populations. This rotation in Medical Oncology focuses on the psychosocial assessment and treatment of adults with solid tumors (breast, lung, etc.).

Our Oncology Counseling team provides individual counseling, couples and family counseling, group therapy and psychoeducational classes aimed at improving quality of life for individuals and families facing cancer. Our scope is to assess and treat psychosocial concerns related to cancer and we refer out for primary mental health presentations outside of psychosocial oncology. We are a team of seven health psychologists and licensed clinical social workers.

As a psychology intern your clinical training experiences would include delivery of: new patient intake assessments, carrying a therapeutic individual caseload, co-leading therapy groups and co-leading psychoeducational classes. We are currently developing a consultation-liaison inpatient psychology service and psychology interns can shadow this clinical modality, as well.

The psychology intern will provide care to patients in-person at the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion or via secure telehealth platform. Group therapy and classes are also held via secure telehealth platform. Individual assessment or therapy appointments are 60 minutes in length and group therapy and psychoeducational classes are 90 to 120 minutes in duration.

Psychosocial services are provided on a multi-disciplinary team in collaboration with oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, nutritionists and genetic counselors.
