National Honors for FMIG

A contingent of representatives from the Department of Family Medicine’s (DFM) student-led Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) are headed to Kansas City to accept an award.
The group has been selected for honorable mention in the FMIG Network of Program Excellence by the American Academy of Family Physicians for their efforts to reach out and expose more medical students to Family Medicine.
Some highlights from this past year included starting a “Dinner with a Family Med Doc” series where a small group of students could sign-up to attend dinner with a FM physician at their home. Topics for the dinners included addiction medicine in pregnancy, ultradistance sports medicine, and transgender care.
They also created a new monthly newsletter and are working to grow these programs and add more clinical skills workshops in the near future.
The award notification letter from the AAFP, in part, says:
“The Program of Excellence Award that your FMIG has won reflects a year of exemplary work. As you celebrate at all you have accomplished, I hope you will also look forward and imagine the long-standing effects of your efforts and how your FMIG can have a long-term impact on health equity through workforce development. Thank you for all you have done to advance family medicine through your school’s FMIG, and congratulations to all on this.”
