Psychiatry Residency

Residents entering psychiatry training now join an exciting, rapidly evolving field.  Our department and its training programs build on a deep tradition in psychotherapy, cultural awareness, and community engagement that have always been part of psychiatry’s foundation, while at the same incorporating evolving developments in molecular, neuronal, and genetic aspects of brain function. The faculty of the Department of Psychiatry are dedicated to training you, bringing the latest scientific evidence, clinical models, and technology to understand and treat mental illnesses. Faculty who lead nationally known programs in substance abuse, women’s health, neuropsychiatry, neuro-imaging, molecular genetics, psychopharmacology, refugee mental health, LGBTQ mental health, infant and early childhood development, integrated care, forensics, tele-psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and mood disorders are integrated into residents’ clinical rotations and scholarly experiences.  This rich tapestry of experiences and expertise helps trainees identify and explore their passions.

Our unique program offers diverse clinical experiences at University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, the Denver Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and other training settings throughout our community.  Intensive teaching in clinical settings is complemented by formal conferences, individual supervision, and research and scholarly activities, offering residents full access to the faculty's expertise and mentorship.

Clinical Expertise: To achieve excellence in patient care through a model of graduated supervision and participation in gold standard, cutting edge clinical care across the age span, in varied continuums of care, clinical settings, patient populations, clinical presentations, and levels of severity including preventative care.

To incorporate the wealth of cultural knowledge on how social contexts impact physical and psychological well-being.

Leadership:  To train the future leaders of psychiatry by developing stewardship skills and inspiring the confidence to manage, supervise, collaborate with, and inspire multidisciplinary teams and serve as role models for excellence in psychiatric care.

Recruitment:  To recruit interns who are curious, committed to supporting their colleagues, contributing to the wellbeing of their community, driven to achieve the highest professional standards, and who will fully utilizing educational opportunities throughout their training.  To utilize processes during recruitment to mitigate bias in the selection process.

Community Engagement:  To provide opportunities and mentorship for engagement in our community through advocacy, community partnerships, volunteerism, scholarship and education.

Learning and Education:  To utilize adult learning models to maximize uptake of information and skills across clinical and other experiences.  To preserve and enhance curiosity and develop lifelong learning skills and plans.    To develop excellence in self-knowledge regarding effective learning strategies as well as providing education for others.

Scholarship: To instill values of objectivity, honesty, openness, methodological rigor, careful interpretation of results, and collaboration. To gain research literacy and be prepared to engage in scholarship during their career. To provide an environment that is inspiring and conducive to pursuit of scholarly work during residency training. This includes access to mentorship and methodological support, training in research methods, and encouragement of engagement in research via grand rounds, departmental research activities, and access to scientific resources.
