Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship
Eligibility and Application
Applications are accepted from graduates of MD and DO programs, and from graduates of equivalent international medical programs.
Completion of the PGY-2 and PGY-3 training years in a general psychiatry residency is the basic requirement for application. Additionally, residents are required to hold a valid Colorado medical license. Upon formal acceptance to the program, application for licensure must be initiated so that residents are licensed as they begin the program.
To ensure that the process for selecting residents is consistent with guidelines established by the ACGME, Graduate Medical Education Committee (GME), University of Colorado School of Medicine and compliant with appropriate Federal and State statutes and regulations, this program has the following eligibility requirements.
1. Applicants must provide documentation of the following:
- Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or
- Graduation from any college of College of Osteopathic Medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or
- Graduation from medical school outside of the United States or Canada and possessing a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment; or, have an active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Colorado; or
- Graduation from medical schools outside the United States and completion of a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME - accredited medical school.
2. Applicants must be eligible for an active and unrestricted physician medical license as granted by the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners (CBME) and a DEA license.
3. Applicants must successfully pass a criminal background investigation (criteria specified in UCD and GMEC background investigation policies) and any affiliated training facility background investigation as necessary.
4. The University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine recognizes that residents enrolled in its programs are trainees, not employees. As such, applicants must be able to meet conditions of the institutional houseofficer (resident) training agreement. Specifically, residents in our program must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or possess the appropriate documentation to allow residents to legally train at the UCDenver School of Medicine.
5. Individuals applying for psychiatry fellowship programs must document completion of an appropriate psychiatry residency program, including an ACGME-accredited residency, or meet requirements as outlined in ACGME program requirements.
6. Individuals applying for psychiatry fellowship programs must have successfully completed the USMLE Step 3 examination or COMLEX Part 3, as evidenced by obtaining a passing grade for that examination, prior to applying for a fellowship program.
A Resident Selection Committee for each training program evaluates all eligible applicants. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their preparedness and experience; academic credentials; ability and aptitude; communication and interpersonal skills; and on personal qualities such as integrity, learning motivation, and work ethic, and the ability to function within parameters expected of a practitioner in the specialty.
To determine the appropriate level of training for applicants wishing to transfer from another training program, the program director must receive verification of previous training experiences and a statement from the resident’s current program director regarding the performance evaluation of the transferring resident prior to acceptance into the program.
Programs will review and select applicants in a manner consistent with provisions of equal opportunity employment and must not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability or any other applicable legally protected status.
1. Applicants must apply via the Electronic Resident Application System (ERAS) and must register with the National Resident Matching Program.
2. All applications must include the following:
- Original graduate transcript(s), when applicable
- Original medical school transcript(s)
- Original Dean's Letter (MSPE)
- Certified copy of medical school diploma
- Copies of state medical license(s), DEA certificate, when applicable
- Documentation of ECFMG certification, when applicable
- Documentation of status, for international applicants
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal Statement
- Two professional letters of recommendation and one PD letter of recommendation that includes the attestation form
- Documentation of post-graduate medical education completed elsewhere
- Documentation of successful passing scores on USMLE parts 1, 2 and 3
- Personal interviews with program faculty and residents

Supporting information, including graduate school transcripts and letters should be requested by the applicant.
Because there are differences in training centers, and the individual applicant’s personal goals for training, it is essential that each applicant visit the center in order to see the facilities, meet some of the facility members, sit in on a seminar if possible, and have a chance to meet informally with a few of the current residents in order to get their views of the program. These activities and interviews can be accomplished in a single, very busy day, but we recommend that the applicant arrange to be here for the entire day if travel plans permit. Due to the large number of applications we receive, we are unable to interview everyone. The Selection Committee will review your application file, and we will let you know if interviews are to be scheduled. Your application will not be considered unless you complete the interview process.
Onsite interviews with program faculty and current residents are scheduled after applicants have been selected to interview. Because there are differences in residency programs and the individual applicant’s personal goals for training, it is essential that each applicant interview in person on site. A full day of interviews, tours and/or seminar attendance, and informal contact with current residents is scheduled.
Due to the large number of applications we receive, we are unable to interview everyone. The Selection Committee will review your application file, and we will notify you if you have been selected to interview.
The dates by which we must receive your completed application and for scheduling your interview vary slightly from year to year.
For the 2022-2023 academic year:
- Applications must be received by September 15, 2021
- Interview dates will be held on Thursdays starting on August 15th through October 2nd
