Goal Area: Innovative Care Models

The innovative care models goal is to instill a department-wide commitment to expanding the use of multidisciplinary teams in all its programs. Multidisciplinary includes administrative staff as well as faculty. Build out innovative care models, including higher levels of care and specialty clinics.

Objectives

Leadership – Increase the number of professional disciplines represented in leadership.
Training – Expand and refine multidisciplinary didactics and training throughout all the department’s educational programs.
Capacity – Deepen our service capacity using group and cohort models.

Intensive outpatient programming (IOP) - a service model focused on providing rapid access to higher-level care.
- Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Anxiety
- Women's Behavioral Health and Wellness
A pilot implementation of a new clinical program delivering computer-assisted Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy skills to treat mild to severe depression and associated anxiety. The computer sessions are combined with regular 30 min telehealth check ins with a clinician.

Build a robust Neuromodulation and Advanced Therapeutics Program.

Continue work with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for OCD, in partnership with the Department of Neurosurgery. Expand the use of DBS to other indications such as major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or Tourette’s syndrome. Applying for Investigative Device Exemption for DBS for schizophrenia. Continue DBS research.
PET MR Project including using neuroimaging with positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance (MR), this research will assess the role of specific brain receptors in contributing to the therapeutic effects of the psychedelic drug psilocybin in Major Depressive Disorder. An initial pilot study is set to begin in late 2023.
Start an Esketamine clinic in 2023. In 2019 Esketamine was FDA-approved as an add-on medication, for patients suffering from treatment resistant depression. Treatments are typically 2 times per week, tapering frequency as patients respond.
Continue to grow our Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) service by expanding hours and staffing.
Start Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) program by opening an ECT suite in the new inpatient unit in 2023.

Expansion of Mental Health coverage in Transplant: Department of Psychiatry Adult Division collaboration with the Transplant Department to build a more robust, specialized service line to specifically serve the complex mental health needs of the peri-transplant population, including outpatient psychiatric evaluations and management, psychotherapy, consults, and care coordination.

Nurse Practitioner students more structured and focused training
Continue partnership with Denver Health for the physician assistant fellowship program.
Utilize Community-based teaching for specialty areas focused on Social Work interns, Nurse Practitioner, and Multi-Disciplinary.
Call project proposal creating a multidisciplinary team trained to meet the afterhours/weekend needs to cover an ever-growing Department across the continuum of care.
