Understanding lung dysfunction and applying this knowledge to improve the pulmonary management and outcomes of surgical patients.
The main long-term goal of our research is to apply concepts of lung physiology and lung injury to improve the pulmonary care and outcomes of surgical patients. My research background includes translational research on animal models of lung injury (small and large), retrospective outcomes studies and prospective clinical trials. In animal models we sought to identify the early inflammatory changes that occur immediately following lung insults, and to investigate tools (e.g. functional CT imaging) for early diagnosis of lung injury. More recently, our clinical research focuses on improving intraoperative mechanical ventilation practices to minimize triggers of lung inflammation (e.g. overdistention, atelectasis), as well as reducing postoperative hypoventilation and improving pulmonary function after surgery.
We value multidisciplinary collaborations. I have participated as PI, co-PI and/or site PI at single-center and multi-center (national and international) clinical prospective and retrospective studies. We have mentored students, anesthesiology residents/fellows and junior faculty for various research pursuits.
Our research has been funded over the years by the Spanish Ministry of Education, the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), investigator-initiated sponsored programs, and the NIH/NHLBI.
