Overview

The Combined Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine Track is an innovative program combining residency training in Anesthesiology and fellowship training in Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine. Two positions are offered for this program yearly.

This program is one of a few nationally to offer an integrated Critical Care Medicine fellowship during the PGY 4 and 5 years of training. Participants alternate 3 months of residency with 3 months of fellowship during the final 24 months of training.

Advantages of this integrated program

• Involvement in the Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Subspecialty from the beginning of training: CACCM residents are included in critical care conferences, assigned mentorship with critical care faculty, and participate in social events. This increases comradery with co-fellows in the CACCM track, ACCM fellowship & faculty; builds networking within the hospital and nationally, and eases the transition into the fellow role during the PGY 4 year.
• Improved Work/Life Balance: The traditional 12-month ACCM fellowship is a high-intensity year of subspecialty training. Clinical and emotional patient complexity can contribute to exhaustion and burnout. Alternatively, the integrated CACCM fellowship allows participants to return to the operating rooms as a resident and pursue a multitude of elective opportunities while also allowing additional time for academic endeavors over the 24 month fellowship period.
• Enhanced Academic Productivity & Career Development: CACCM track participants are engaged in academic projects early during their training, and have up to 60 months to develop and publish academic projects. This longitudinal program allows for more personalized mentorship and career development throughout training.
• Networking: CACCM participants are expected to present their academic projects at national conferences yearly. Departmental funding and academic time support are provided to achieve this expectation.
• One less Match: By applying to CACCM track, participants will not need to partake in an additional interview season and match process for ACCM fellowship.
• Know where you will be for Fellowship: The integrated fellowship negates the need to move to a new hospital or state to complete the traditional 12 month ACCM fellowship.
• Multiple Board Certifications: Graduates from this program are Board Eligible for dual certification in Anesthesiology and Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine through the American Board of Anesthesiology. Our graduates are additionally eligible for certification in Critical Care Echocardiography (CCEeXAM) and Basic Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (PTEeXAM) through the National Board of Echocardiographers.

We are looking for applicants who are interested in an academic career in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. This program is designed for those who have decided on a career in Critical Care Medicine, and have chosen Anesthesiology as the residency training pathway to achieve that goal.
