Curriculum

Duration: One year, Flexible start date July 1 - August 31 of fellowship year

Location: University of Colorado Hospital - Aurora, Colorado

Fellow Percentage: 60%

The fellowship is not ACGME accredited, however it is expected that the Regional and Acute Pain Fellow will continue to evolve and improve based on the Core competencies of the ACGME:

During the year, a fellow will be expected to show steady improvement and eventual mastery of the following tenants of Acute Pain management:

Procedural:

  • Ultrasound and Nerve Stimulation peripheral nerve blocks
  • Peripheral nerve catheters for inpatients and outpatients
  • Neuraxial analgesia

Pre-operative/Intra-operative/Post-operative Management:

  • Pre-operative planning for simple and difficult surgical patients
  • Assessment of patient for eligibility for procedures
  • Anti-coagulation in relation to acute pain procedures
  • Pre-medication
  • Multimodal pain medications – infusions, medication rotation
  • Opioid Sparing management/techniques
  • Epidural management (intra-op use, titration, trouble-shooting)
  • Enhanced recovery (ERAS)
  • Acute pain in the opioid naïve patient
  • Acute-on-chronic pain in the opioid tolerant patient
  • Acute pain in the patient with addiction/dependence history
  • Learning from Advanced Practice Providers (Acute Pain NPs and PAs)
  • Rounding on Pain Rounding Service patients
  • Management of side effects, complications/injury

Academic:

  • Research and/or Quality Improvement project in Acute pain management
  • ASRA case presentation, departmental support available
  • Anatomy lab exposure
  • Presentations at Regional/Acute Pain Journal Clubs

Instruction/Teaching/Supervision:

  • Supervision and guidance of junior and senior residents

               * Teaching during Ultrasound Regional Workshops in Vail, CO

ABA - Board Certification:

  • This is a major point of emphasis
  • The department is happy to help with preparation for oral boards, whether it is advice or practice examinations
