Critical Care
The Department of Anesthesiology includes fifteen board-certified Intensivists staffing the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU), Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), and Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU) at University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) and the Telemedicine ICU (TeleICU) for the University of Colorado Health System.
Department of Anesthesiology faculty currently serve in leadership roles as the Co-Medical Directors for both the STICU and CTICU at UCH and are active in medical education, basic and clinical research.
The STICU is a 24-bed unit and serves as home for the UCH Level 1 Trauma Center and the region’s largest Liver Transplantation Program. The STICU also admits patients from surgical oncology, ENT, plastics, spine surgery, gynecologic oncology, and vascular surgery services.
The CTICU is a 17-bed unit primarily admitting patients from the Cardiothoracic surgery service, including complex aortic surgery, valve replacement, mechanical circulatory devices, and heart and lung transplantation. The CTICU is the home for all UCHealth patient managed with veno-venous and veno-arterial extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
The BurnICU is an 18-bed unit admitting patient from the only American Burn Association (ABA) certified program in the state of Colorado. In additional to managing patient with large complex burns, it is also a referral center for the management of severe skin disorders (SJS/TENS) and necrotizing soft tissue infections.
The Department of Anesthesiology sponsors an ACGME approved fellowship in Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine.
At UCH, we employ a multidisciplinary approach to critical care. Team members include attending intensivists, critical care fellows, anesthesia and surgery residents, medical students, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dieticians, and other frontline providers.
We hold a monthly critical care grand rounds conference, journal club conference, ultrasound conference, daily education series, and have robust patient safety and quality improvement programs in each of the ICUs.
