Anesthesiology Resident Research Track

The mission of the Anesthesiology Residency Research Track is to integrate clinical training with research to cultivate future clinician-scientists and leaders in anesthesiology. Matched applicants are designated as Virtue Research Scholars, honoring Dr. Robert W. Virtue, whose internationally recognized research in the 1950s and 60s laid the foundation for the University of Colorado’s prominence in anesthesiology research.

Program Highlights:

  • Structured training in basic and clinical research, from study design to implementation.
  • Dedicated mentorship to support a productive research career during residency.
  • Opportunities to lead and mentor research teams

Incentive:
Upon successful completion of residency and fulfillment of research commitments, scholars are eligible for a $30,000 signing bonus to continue their career at CU.

"
I chose the University of Colorado because of the strong departmental track of faculty and residents successfully receiving research funding for their work and the availability of a T32 fellowship after residency. The department is incredibly supportive and provides resources that allow the opportunity to present my work at national and international conferences. The program was the perfect fit for gaining additional experience in clinical investigation alongside my residency training and will help me attain my goal of becoming an independent investigator and leader in Anesthesiology research."

- Elijah Christensen, CA-1 , inaugural clinical research trainee

Recruitment

Applicants with a strong interest and research track record are reviewed by both the resident and research recruitment committees. Qualified applicants are offered an interview on a research-focused date. Our top applicants are actively recruited.

Join us for a Virtual Open House on Wednesday, August 13, 2026, 5:30 - 6:30 PM MDT, where you will have the chance to meet the program directors for the residency program, CACCM track, and Research track, as well as current residents.

Visit the Residency Application page for detailed instructions on the residency application process through ERAS.

Through ERAS, apply specifically to the Residency Research Track. Also, take the opportunity in your ERAS application to describe your research experience and what led you to pursue both anesthesiology and research training.

Additionally, given the large volume of applications received each year, we highly encourage applicants to utilize the ERAS Program Signaling feature to highlight their interest in the program.
