Medical Student Externship Scholarship

Announcing an opportunity for academic year 2026-27

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine offers up to four $3,500 scholarships for 4th-year visiting medical students completing a four-week anesthesiology rotation at CU Anschutz. Awards will be notified by June 15, 2026, and rotations occur in late summer through early fall, depending on availability.

Program Description

The Externship Scholarship Program is designed to give students the experience of rotating as an anesthesiology “Acting Intern” (4th year medical student) at University of Colorado Department of Anesthesiology. The "Acting Intern" will function in the role of an anesthesiology resident and will be required to attend all conferences including core curriculum, morbidity and mortality conference, rotation-based clinical case conferences, and simulation lab experiences with the anesthesiology residents.

Rotation Options

Students may rotate as an anesthesiology “Acting Intern” in:

• Surgical Trauma ICU (STICU) or Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU) — choose one ICU rotation for the full 4 weeks
• Subspecialty rotations at UCH (2 weeks each; options: Acute/Chronic Pain, OB, Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgery, Transplant, General OR)
• Children’s Hospital Colorado / Denver Health Medical Center (1 week each)

Eligibility

• Final-year medical students in good academic standing
• Strongly encouraged: students with leadership/advocacy experience, first-generation college, rural/underserved background, interest in pediatric anesthesiology, or experience overcoming hardship

• One-page personal statement

• One letter of recommendation
• Interview with committee members (May–June 2026)
