Research in anesthesiology is essential yet often underfunded and less common than other medical fields, making it critically important to support. Fewer than a third of academic anesthesiology departments have robust, dedicated research teams. Yet, research is crucial as anesthesiologists are responsible not only for managing pain but also for ensuring the safety of patients during surgery by maintaining vital organ function. The work in anesthesiology research leads to better perioperative outcomes, new pain management techniques, and safer anesthesia practices, yet it faces ongoing challenges in securing the necessary financial backing.

Our Department's Global Health Anesthesiology Program, which includes a one-month elective at one of our global-partner hospital sites for three qualifying residents, as well as a unique non-ACGME Fellowship in Global Anesthesiology, is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to tackle urgent health challenges in underserved populations around the world while empowering hospitals worldwide to perform more comprehensive surgical interventions while reducing the risk of catastrophic harm.
