Course Description

The course is a full day of immersive simulation education. Participants will spend time being familiarized with the high-fidelity mannequin in the simulated environment before taking turns to manage realistic anesthesia-inspired critical events.

The simulated scenarios will focus on decision-making in the immediate management of hypoxemia and hypotension in the extended anesthesia workplace. In addition, it will also cover aspects of crisis and resource management including: communication  and teamwork skills.  

State-of-the-art audiovisual equipment is used to enhance the event debriefing which takes place after every simulated event.

Course highlights:

  • This course is not an assessment where participants pass or fail
  • Small course size: 4-6 participants with 2-3 facilitators per course
  • Participate in at least one scenario in the "hot seat" as the primary anesthesiologist
  • Reflect on personal and team performance in debrief sessions
  • University of Colorado is an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Simulation Education Network endorsed site

It has been designed to fulfill one requirement of the American Board of Anesthesiology's (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology. Attendance, along with completion of the ASA online evaluation and follow-up survey, will satisfy the Part IV-Practice Performance Assessment and Improvement requirement.

Course Objectives & Accreditation

Objectives

  1. To acquire or further develop an effective skill set to work in a team environment and provide optimal patient care in critical situations.
  2. To improve communication skills in complex clinical situations and rare life-threatening events.
  3. To enhance personal skills for effective situational awareness, assertiveness, and decision making in critical, life-threatening patient care situations.
  4. To identify personal areas of practice improvement that will directly impact patient care in the perioperative period.
  5. To develop or improve skills as a leader of the healthcare team to advance the culture of patient safety in your practice area or hospital.

Accreditation

The University of Colorado School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Colorado School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 8 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in this activity.

$2,000 (includes course materials, continental breakfast, and lunch)

Cancellation Policy

We will confirm the course for participants four (4) weeks in advance. We need at least four (4) people to run the course. Full refunds will be given to all participants if the course is not filled by the four (4) week cut-off. We will allow cancellations four (4) weeks before the course with a cancellation penalty of $200. Substitutions are allowed up to one (1) week in advance of the course. If you are able to find another person to fill your slot, we will refund you the course fee, minus the cancellation penalty.
