Investigation of mitochondrial biogenesis and its intersection with oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.
My current research interests mainly focus on the investigation of mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunction and the linkage between mitochondria and inflammation. In this regard we have been investigating the role of cyclophilin D in the regulation of oxidative stress and inflammatory response, in particular in the kidney and vasculature.
Another important aspect of my research is focused on the development and validation of biomarkers of oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and inflammation in patients with kidney disease and kidney injury. Examples include biomarkers for disease progression in patients with chronic kidney disease including autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, biomarkers for acute and chronic rejection in kidney transplant patients and biomarkers predictive of multiple organ injury following cardiopulmonary bypass.
Our research is highly collaborative, and we collaborate successfully with researchers in internal medicine, cardiology, surgery, pediatrics, as well as basic science. The research is funded by the NIH and AHA.
