In the heart of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the CURE Children's Hospital, Jakob Gamboa, MD  and a team embarked on a transformative journey in January this year. Their mission? To establish the inaugural self-sustaining scoliosis correction surgery program in a country home to over 120 million people. This monumental effort aimed not just at correcting spinal deformities but at igniting hope and fostering independence in Ethiopian healthcare. 

A Pioneering Endeavor

Ethiopia, with its rich history and diverse cultures, faces significant healthcare challenges, especially in specialized medical procedures like scoliosis surgery. Dr. Gamboa, a first-year attending anesthesiologist with a heart for global health, recognized the urgent need for such specialized care.

"The absence of a local scoliosis surgery program meant that countless children and adults were left without the hope of correction for their conditions," Gamboa shared. With his team's arrival, a beacon of hope was lit for many.

Building Capabilities and Confidence

The team's approach was multifaceted, focusing on capacity building, training, and hands-on support. A key component of their mission was working closely with the hospital's anesthesia team and new intraoperative neuromonitoring technologists to develop and implement new protocols and techniques tailored for managing complex scoliosis surgeries. "These surgeries are intricate and require precise anesthetic management to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes," explained Dr. Gamboa. The training provided was not just about imparting knowledge but about empowering the local team with confidence and skills.

The initial phase of this ambitious program was a resounding success. All patients treated during Dr. Gamboa's visit benefited from significantly improved outcomes. "Seeing our patients' lives change for the better was profoundly rewarding. It reinforced our belief in what we can achieve together," Dr. Gamboa reflected with pride.

The journey doesn't end here. Their vision is not only sustain but also expand this vital service, making scoliosis surgery accessible to more Ethiopians in need.

"This mission was more than just about surgery. It was about sharing knowledge, building lasting partnerships, and empowering a community to take charge of its healthcare needs," Dr. Gamboa concluded.
