What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I enjoyed all of my rotations, and anesthesiology combines elements of every type of medicine. I loved how my anesthesia mentors were also experts in cardiology, pulm, etc.
Emma Dodd

Hobbies: I enjoy anything that lets me trade a little suffering for mountain views—backpacking, long-distance running, skiing, and backcountry hunting. But my favorite (and most time-consuming) hobbies are chatting with my husband and cleaning my house.
Fun facts: Having grown up as a country kid, I can catch a chicken and lull it to sleep within seconds. My husband and I have a Colorado Mountain Dog named Sunny, who loves uphill skiing with me! Once, my sister and I ran a 5K as a three-legged race because we were so competitive and couldn’t bear to lose to each other. We were sore for a week.
Before I came into medicine: I spent a few years working as a medical scribe in college and before medical school, but most of my work experience was as a waitress. I also sold chocolate chip cookies at the local corner store when I was a kid.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: Anesthesiology combines my favorite aspects of medicine—physiology, pharmacology, hands-on procedures, and critical care medicine. I consider it an honor to care for patients during some of their most stressful and vulnerable moments. Aside from the frigid temperature, I truly enjoy the OR environment, which is filled with camaraderie, efficiency, and teamwork.

Before I came into medicine: After my undergraduate, I pursued a Master of Science degree in Toxicology, intending to get a PhD. However, I realized I like humans more than mice and decided to switch to medical school.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I may be a little biased, but I think Anesthesiology is the best specialty in medicine. We get to use really cool pharmacology and perform satisfying procedures, to guide our patient through a very stressful time in their life. The highlight for me is the short but incredibly meaningful patient interactions.

Before I came into medicine: I worked as a campus minister at Gonzaga University and officiated high school and college volleyball all over the country.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: In Anesthesiology, we must use all of our skills and creativity to solve problems. We have to be extremely well-prepared but able to be flexible and quickly adapt. I love the OR, where there are times we’re actually able to heal or cure patients. I especially love the collaboration and teamwork that makes up the OR and the anesthesiologist is right in the thick of it all. I love being a part of that team caring for the sickest patients.

Apart from that I love athletics with my weightlifting and boxing still going strong since undergrad! Finally, I have 2 cats and a dog which are somehow my greatest loves as well as the bane of my existence. Fun facts: I trained in professional wrestling for approximately a year and a half! It came to an end when my Achilles tendon ruptured in addition to being accepted to a medical school across the country.
Before I came into medicine: Apart from my time in undergrad and grad school, I also worked as an EMT
from 2017-2021 in Chicago! It was a great experience and was particularly interesting to work through the
COVID lockdown.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I love how anesthesiology requires
providers to be a jack of all trades. If you’re working an OB case you have to get all the respective knowledge
out and at the ready and if you’re working an urology case the exact same has to happen- and so on and so
forth. Not only that but surgery is one of the most terrifying experiences that someone can go through. The
fact that an anesthesiologist has 30 minutes to an hour to gain a patients faith in their ability to keep them
safe through the procedure is the skill that drew me to this specialty.

What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I I found myself interested in acute medicine, cardiopulmonary physiology, and surgery. When I rotated in anesthesia, the days went by fast. I felt like I fit in with my anesthesia mentors. I could not be happier with my choice as a matter of a fact, I have come to believe that "everyone wants to be an anesthesiologist; however, not everyone knows that they want to be an anesthesiologist."

Fun facts: I grew up in rural Minnesota - my hometown population is less than 100. My elementary class size was 10 and there were only two girls (including me).
Before I came into medicine: I went to medical school right out of undergrad. But prior to medical school I worked several jobs including being a waitress and a CNA in various settings (nursing home, hospital, ED, and hospice).
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I initially planned to become a rural family physician, but an anesthesia rotation reshaped my path. I was drawn to the specialty’s fast pace, the ability to see immediate results, and the depth of knowledge it requires in physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy.
Lauren Mackell

Before I came into medicine: I transitioned directly into medical school after undergraduate. During my time in college, I served as a mentor, assisted in founding the American Medical Women’s Association chapter at my university, and worked as a server/bartender at an indoor golf course.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I entered medical school with the goal of pursuing a career in anesthesiology. My interest began in college while working as an intern for a pain medicine physician and shadowing an anesthesiologist in the operating room. I was drawn to the field’s integration of neuroscience and physiology, as well as the opportunity to perform a wide range of procedures. This interest was further solidified during my clinical rotations in medical school, where I gained hands-on exposure and developed a deep appreciation for the collaborative, team-based environment of the operating room.

Before I came into medicine: I took a gap year before starting medical school, during which I moved back in with my parents (thanks, COVID!) and worked as both a CNA and a lifeguard.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: Beyond the fulfillment I found in managing diverse physiologic states within the collaborative OR environment, I was especially inspired by the anesthesiologist’s role as a patient advocate during some of their most vulnerable moments. The ability to ease patients’ fears while keeping them safe and comfortable throughout the perioperative period is what drew me most to the field.

My favorite food is pizza, and I even have a home pizza oven!Fun facts: I got my first dog during my fourth year of medical school - she's excited to become a mountain dog in Colorado! Before I came into medicine: I did not take gap years during my schooling, but had a number of jobs throughout that time. I have worked several restaurant jobs, and did everything from serving and bartending to working in the kitchen. I also worked at a hospital as a part of a research team for several summers. While in undergrad, I worked at the tutoring center at my university, helping students with chemistry, biology, physics, and calculus. While in medical school, I worked as a dog walker during the more flexible periods.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: Anesthesiology combined all of my favorite parts of medicine with a workflow and patient relationship that keeps me feeling engaged and fulfilled every time I step foot in the hospital. I love the ability to nerd out about medical details one minute, then do a procedure the next, all while keeping the patient safe and comfortable along the way.

What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I am drawn to anesthesiology because I want the challenge of a field that utilizes all aspects of medicine including physiology, pharmacology, and procedural skills. What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: The first time I was directly responsible for the lives of others was through ocean lifeguarding. The strengths I developed in that role paralleled the skills of the anesthesiologists I met on my journey to medicine. I was drawn to the people in this field and the way they approached the care they delivered. The art of anesthesia also lends itself creativity by being able to use different methods to accomplish the same goal.

Before I came into medicine: I wanted to go into medicine for as long as I can remember, but along the way, I worked in almost every department of a grocery store for eight years, spent time paving roads with my town's highway department for a summer, and then worked in a pulmonology lab before starting medical school.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I initially went to school interested in critical care but was eventually exposed to anesthesia. I like how similar they are in terms of physiology, but I really love how the real-time nature of anesthesia allows for super focused and hands-on patient care. I also love that anesthesia has a good mix of high acuity cases with more routine ones on a daily basis.

What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: I have really appreciated my training so far in internal medicine and have loved the connections I’ve made with patients and coworkers. Hobbies: I started fly fishing in medical school, spending weekends in Midwest rivers with friends. I’m really into photography, and I primarily shoot on old film cameras, even the massive accordion style ones. Before I came into medicine: During college I worked as a dispatcher for a 911 service in central Illinois before also starting to work on the ambulance. We covered a few thousand square miles in a largely rural area.
What made me pursue my residency training in Anesthesiology: My experience working on an ambulance was the biggest factor in choosing Anesthesiology. I loved working with just one patient at a time and really doing everything in your power to help them. I’ve always been a bit of a tinkerer, and the OR/ICU gives me a lot of opportunities to work with physiology and see results in real time. I really appreciate the fact that there’s not always just one right answer in anesthesiology, and that no two days are truly alike.
