Dr. Robert W. Schrier led the Department of Medicine for 26 years, expanding faculty from 75 to 500 and research funding from $3M to nearly $100M. A pioneering nephrologist, he was internationally recognized for his work in kidney disease and held 45 years of continuous NIH funding. He was the only person to lead ASN, ISN, and NKF and established the department’s first endowed chair, marking a new era of philanthropic support. His greatest legacy is as a mentor, shaping generations of physician-leaders. The endowed chair in his name continues to support future physician-scientists.

With support from the Robert W. Schrier Endowed Chair, Dr. Chopra built a research team focused on improving IV device use through patient experience data. Their work has shaped policies at every level, led to published guidelines, smartphone apps, and global education efforts. Recently, the team expanded into studying central venous catheters in cancer patients, resulting in the first-ever international guidelines for this vulnerable group.

Peter Buttrick joined the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2006. He has authored over 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts and serves on multiple academic journal editorial boards. Dr. Buttrick was also president of the Association of University Cardiologists and was inducted into the American Association of Physicians in 2009.

He earned his medical degree from SUNY Stony Brook, completed his residency at Michael Reese Hospital, and was a cardiology fellow at Montefiore Medical Center. His research focuses on cardiomyocyte biology and cellular adaptations in heart performance.

Dr. Kao is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Informatics, Medical Director of the UCHealth CARE Innovation Center and the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine, and a practicing cardiologist. Trained at Johns Hopkins and Stanford, he joined the CU faculty after completing his cardiology fellowship in Colorado.

With 110+ publications, his work integrates clinical expertise and informatics to better understand and improve management of heart failure, especially in women. He also helps lead UCHealth’s systemwide efforts to deliver personalized, data-driven care to more than 2.5 million patients.

How the funds are being used:

Funds from the endowed chair support the creation of large data resources including hospitalization data, clinical trials, observational studies, and drug safety information that help advance research on sex differences and women’s health. The chair also supports early career investigators working on topics such as cardiovascular complications of pregnancy and the influence of female reproductive hormones across the lifespan.

These projects give young researchers hands on experience with data science tools like machine learning and artificial intelligence and encourage collaboration with the Ludeman Family Center for Women’s Health Research. The overall goal is to support and guide the next generation of researchers in women’s health and sex differences.

Successful Denver area entrepreneurs with no known connection to the University of Colorado, Joseph and Rose LaConte made a transformative gift through their estate to support cardiology. This endowed chair is making a measurable impact at CU Anschutz by supporting research and innovation in cardiology treatments.

The LaContes, hard-working vegetable farmers, developed commercial real estate in Westminster for years as well as a drive-in movie theater; the LaConte Shopping Center in Westminster bears their name. Joseph died in 2001 at age 91; Rose died in 2006 at 94.

Dr. Goldner is Professor and Head of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes. She founded the Thyroid and Endocrine Tumor Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and has been a member of both the NCCN and American Thyroid Association’s Thyroid Cancer Guidelines committees. Her research explores links between environmental exposures and thyroid neoplasms, with a goal of identifying novel risk factors as well as identifying rural-urban disparities in access to care, especially relevant in Colorado’s many rural communities. As CEO of Marketo and iCIMS, he led growth and successful acquisitions, including the $4.75 billion acquisition of Marketo by Adobe. Gordon Meiklejohn Endowed Chair for Internal Medicine

In 1951, Dr. Gordon Meiklejohn became chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, a position he was to hold for 25 years. When he stepped down in 1976, Dr. Meiklejohn was one of the longest tenured department chairs in the country!​ Dr. Meiklejohn’s enormously productive research career focused on atypicall pneumonias and viral respiratory diseases, particularly influenza.​ Dr. Meiklejohn participated actively and enthusiastically in the World Health Organization’s Smallpox Eradication Program and made many field visits in support of that program in Zaire, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Indonesia, and India. The Indians referred to him simply as ‘‘The Professor,’’ a name that truly fit.​ He was often described as quiet, thoughtful, wise, and soft-spoken, and he was all of those. Two characteristics stood out, however: unquestioned integrity and gentle humility. ​

Since its inception, the Gordon Meiklejohn Endowed Chair has been held by the Division Head of General Internal Medicine. The endowment has supported academic and research excellence in the GIM Division through an annual internal small grants program and a visiting professorship. In addition to these programs, the endowment has helped to support a variety of investigators who have needed one-time funds to sustain or build their research programs as well as provide start-up funding for strategic academic initiatives. Many of the small grants supported by the endowment have led to peer reviewed papers, created the pilot data needed to compete for larger extra-mural grants or enabled the start-up of novel programs or initiatives that have gone on obtain sustainable funding. The Meiklejohn endowment has been a critical driver of the Division’s success in becoming one of the top divisions nationally.

Dr. Cari Levy is Division Head of Geriatric Medicine at the CU School of Medicine and a Professor of Medicine with board certifications in Geriatrics and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Dr. R. Mark Gritz honors Dr. Peter Shaughnessy’s legacy by advancing health services, evidence-based policy, and long-term care quality. In addition to Dr. Gritz’s pioneering research, the Shaughnessy Endowed Chair has supported the professional development of junior faculty in the Division of Health Policy and Research. The funding enabled participation in key professional meetings and collaboration on projects such as nursing home quality measurement. Over the past two years, these funds contributed to the national expansion of the home health value-based purchasing demonstration, now a permanent CMS program, and helped disseminate lessons learned from nursing home infection control during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Robert Allen, who joined the University of Colorado in 1977 as the chief of the Division of Hematology, led the division for nearly 40 years. The Allen family has generously funded four endowed chairs and contributed to two others, leaving an unmatched legacy in advancing care, research, and education in the field of hematology.

Dr. Brandon McMahon joined the University of Colorado in 2016, focusing clinically on thrombosis and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Previously at Northwestern University, he held leadership roles in the fellowship program and received multiple teaching awards. Bob and Nancy moved to Colorado, where he became Director of the Division of Hematology at the University of Colorado, a role he held for 40 years. A leader in Vitamin B-12 and folate research, Bob published over 200 papers and earned 16 U.S. patents for diagnostic tests and treatments still considered the gold standard today. His key discoveries—such as B-12 analogs that caused misdiagnoses and flaws in early prenatal vitamins—transformed care for vitamin deficiencies. The first recipient of the NIH MERIT Award, he was also a devoted mentor whose trainees now practice worldwide.

Now Clinical Director of Leukemia Services and interim Division Chief of Hematology at the University of Colorado, he leads early-phase clinical trials and has received funding from the NIH and major hematology foundations. He has over 160 peer-reviewed publications and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences. He is the Acute Myeloid Leukemia Guidelines Committee Chair for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Tim Gill is a Colorado native, entrepreneur, and activist for positive social change who actively supports equal rights and opportunity for every citizen. He and his foundation work to counter discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender expression. His foundation has been a major factor in advancing equality and human rights for the LGBTQ community across the nation. In 1993 his generous donation established the Tim Gill Endowment and Distinguished Lectureship. He was a recipient of the University of Colorado Distinguished Service Award in 1998. The Professorship was established to support HIV research at the University of Colorado and to promote HIV education at the University and within the Colorado community. Each year a Tim Gill Distinguished Lecturer is selected based on expertise in HIV research and care, for their skill in teaching and for their humanism that informs and enhances their communities and the world.

Eric M. Poeschla, M.D., is Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. A molecular virologist, innate immunologist, and practicing infectious disease specialist, Dr. Poeschla focuses on HIV-1 and antiviral innate immunity. He received his M.D. from Yale and completed his internal medicine residency at UCSF during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a formative experience that led him to pursue a research career in basic virology.

Following tropical medicine training in Papua New Guinea, he completed a fellowship in infectious diseases and HIV molecular virology at UC San Diego. Before joining CU Anschutz as Division Head in 2014, he spent 15 years on the faculty at the Mayo Clinic. Over his career, he has been continuously federally funded for 27 years through grants from NIAID, NIDA, and the VA.

Dr. Poeschla’s laboratory investigates how cellular proteins regulate HIV-1 and other viral replication cycles, as well as innate immune defenses that prevent cross-species transmission. Early contributions included defining the life cycle of the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), developing the first FIV-based lentiviral vectors, and foundational advances in understanding of the HIV-1 cofactor LEDGF/p75. Supported by the Gill Foundation and NIH, his team has also explored innate immune factors shared by HIV-1 and other RNA viruses, characterized HIV-1 inhibitors like lenacapavir (GS-6207) and ALLINIs, and created a novel transgenic mouse model to study viral nucleic acid sensing, recognized by an NIH Avant Garde Award for HIV Research. Recently, his lab identified a natural HIV/SIV restriction in large bat species, a key finding in understanding zoonotic threats.

During his leadership, Dr. Poeschla significantly expanded the Infectious Diseases division and guided it through the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, he stepped down as Division Head to concentrate on advancing his research program.

Originally from Texas, Dr. Patel earned her microbiology degree at UT Austin, completed medical school at UTMB Galveston, and trained in internal medicine at the University of Colorado. She completed oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she served on faculty for 13 years.

Her research focuses on neoadjuvant therapy, biomarkers, and rare melanomas to improve patient care. She has chaired the SWOG Melanoma Committee since 2021 and co-hosts the podcast Melanoma Matters.

Dr. Dreskin, Professor in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Director of the CU Allergy and Immunology Practice, leads research on peanut allergens—specifically the potent proteins Ara h 2 and Ara h 6. Dr. Thomas Petty was an internationally recognized respiratory physician, renowned for his contributions to the care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He advanced treatments like pulmonary rehabilitation and portable oxygen, improving quality of life for many. One of his early achievements at the University of Colorado in 1963 was adapting portable oxygen cylinders developed for the US space mission for COPD patients. He also first described Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and positive end-expiratory pressure ventilation which remains central for its treatment.

Dr. Miller has focused on understanding lung cancer susceptibility since his early training at CU. Elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 1990, he has served as deputy editor for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and has had continuous research funding for over 40 years. His research explores ways to reduce lung cancer risk, with a particular focus on premalignant lesions. As head of the CU Colorado Pulmonary Premalignancy Program, he’s investigating natural reparative processes in the lungs and how to prevent premalignancy from evolving into cancer. In collaboration with Dr. Robert Keith and Dr. Mark Geraci, Miller led a clinical trial on iloprost, which became the first to successfully improve endobronchial premalignancy.

Under the leadership of Gordon Meiklejohn, MD, who served from 1951 to 1975, Roger Mitchell, MD, was recruited in 1955 as the first director of the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine, a position he held until 1970. Dr. Mitchell was awarded the Trudeau Medal in 1980. The division graduated its first trainee in 1958 and initially focused on developing clinician-investigators in clinical and physiological sciences. By 1970, fewer than half of its graduates pursued academic careers. In the years following, a national shortage of academic pulmonologists in both clinical and scientific disciplines was recognized.

Tomas Berl, MD, FASN, is a past president of the American Society of Nephrology and served over 20 years as Director of CU’s Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension. Trained at NYU, Albert Einstein, UCSF, and CU, his research focuses on diabetic kidney disease, cardiorenal interactions, and sodium and water balance. He has received awards including the Hoechst Traveling Fellowship and Kaiser Permanente Teaching Award.

Michel B. Chonchol, MD, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He completed an internship and a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, as well as a clinical and research fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Chonchol serves as the Head of the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Has established himself as a national and international leader in clinical nephrology. He is significantly productive, with over 400 publications, and has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally. He is well-funded by the National Institute of Health and Industry. Dr Chonchol’s research interests are to explore traditional and non-traditional risk factors in patients with chronic kidney disease and polycystic kidney disease that could explain the high rate of death and cardiovascular events, as well as kidney disease progression observed in this patient population.

Temple Hoyne Buell and National Kidney Foundation Endowed Chair

Temple Hoyne Buell, a renowned architect and philanthropist in Denver, made a lasting impact on the city with his design of some of its most historic buildings. Awarded honorary doctorates from Columbia University and the University of Colorado, he was posthumously inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame in 2013. The Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation, established in 1962, supported major capital projects and endowed positions at universities from 1985 to 1988. For 75 years, the National Kidney Foundation has been transforming kidney care through groundbreaking research, patient advocacy, and community support.

Joshua M. Thurman, MD, is the Temple Hoyne Buell Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of Colorado. A faculty member since completing his fellowship in 2003, Dr. Thurman specializes in treating autoimmune kidney diseases and has led clinical trials exploring new therapies. His NIH-funded research focuses on the mechanisms of autoimmunity and kidney inflammation. His lab has developed innovative anti-inflammatory treatments and imaging tools, including MRI and PET probes, to better detect and monitor kidney disease.

How the funds are being used:

The Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation and the National Kidney Foundation established this chair to advance kidney disease research. Funding supports innovative pilot studies, including Dr. Thurman’s work on transcriptomic analysis of kidney biopsies and the development of novel imaging probes for non-invasive detection of inflammation. These tools help improve disease monitoring and guide more targeted treatments. With support from this endowed chair, Dr. Thurman is leading efforts to make earlier detection and better care a reality for patients with kidney disease.

Charles Boettcher II Endowed Chair in Atherosclerosis Research

The Charles Boettcher II Endowed Chair in Atherosclerosis Research honors the legacy of Charles Boettcher II, a dedicated Coloradan who spent much of his life in Denver. Born on September 21, 1901, Charles was a passionate philanthropist committed to improving society. He married Anna Lou Pigott in 1926 and spent his professional life as a broker in investments. His dedication to community and societal betterment continues through the Boettcher Foundation, which generously endowed this chair at CU Anschutz. This fund supports groundbreaking research in atherosclerosis, a key area of study in cardiovascular health.

Coronary artery atherosclerosis is a leading cause of death worldwide and a deeply personal focus for Dr. Mary C.M. Weiser-Evans, who lost multiple family members and her mentor to sudden heart attacks. While cholesterol-lowering therapies and stents are standard treatments, many patients remain at high risk due to inflammation and vascular cell changes.

Dr. Weiser-Evans is the Charles Boettcher II Professor of Medicine in the Division of Renal Medicine and Hypertension at CU Anschutz. With over 25 years of research, her work centers on vascular smooth muscle cell signaling and the role of a novel vascular stem cell (AdvSca1-SM) in cardiovascular disease.

How the funds are being used:

The Boettcher funds have been instrumental in facilitating our ability to secure larger NIH grants to support our work. These funds continue to support the salary of a junior faculty member as he works toward establishing his own independent research laboratory focused on cardiovascular disease.  Finally, these funds have supported the salaries of previous and current graduate students who made initial observations that systemic up regulation of PTEN is vascular protective, that AdvSca1-SM cells are instrumental in driving atherosclerosis, and translationally relevant studies using nanoparticle-based PTEN delivery as a novel therapeutic approach to limit atherosclerosis and restenosis lesion progression.

William P. Arend Endowed Chair in Rheumatology

This endowed chair was established by Dr. William (Bill) Arend and his family to support research in rheumatology and autoimmune diseases. Dr. Arend led the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Colorado from 1983 to 2000, guiding its rise to national prominence. A renowned scientist and mentor, he is best known for discovering the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), which became the drug anakinra—a key therapy for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Dr. Kevin Deane, a rheumatologist, is honored to hold the Arend Endowed Chair, having begun his research career under the mentorship of Dr. Bill Arend. He has led the first rheumatoid arthritis prevention trial in the U.S. and, with support from the chair and the Autoimmune Disease Prevention Center launched in 2024, continues to advance research, education, mentorship, and clinical care—working toward a future where autoimmune disease prevention is part of everyday medicine.

The William P. Arend Endowed Chair for Rheumatology Research has advanced key discoveries in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly the role of the lung and gut as potential early sites of disease development—before arthritis even begins. These insights have opened new avenues for prevention and treatment. The chair also supports training for students and residents in Dr. Kevin Deane’s lab, fostering the next generation of rheumatology researchers and clinicians. Dr. Arend, a pioneering leader in the field, passed away in 2020.

One of Dr. Holers’ significant contributions is his preclinical program focused on the pathogenesis and prevention of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). His research delves into the complement system, which, when overactive, contributes to inflammation and tissue damage in RA> By developing preclinical models, Dr. Holers aims to identify early markers and potential therapeutic targets before clinical symptoms appear, paving the way for more effective prevention strategies.

Dr. Holers and his team have prioritize exploring uncharted territories with the potential for transformative discoveries. These innovative research projects often carry inherent uncertainties, but their success can lead to groundbreaking treatments and preventative measures that can drastically improve patient outcomes. In the case of Dr. Holers’ work on RA, such research aims to uncover new mechanisms of disease and identify novel targets for prevention, ultimately striving to stop RA before it manifests.

Dr. Kuhn is the Scoville Endowed Chair, Head of the Division of Rheumatology, and Professor of Medicine and Immunology & Microbiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She leads the Division with a clear vision: to be the leader in shaping rheumatologic care through discovery and innovation. Dr. Kuhn's research has uncovered critical roles for specific bacteria and their byproducts in the development of spondyloarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to her scientific contributions, she has built a dynamic and multidisciplinary team, recruiting top-tier talent to investigate diverse pathways involved in the onset—and potential prevention—of rheumatic diseases. Under her leadership, the Division has seen substantial growth in clinical services and training of the next generation of rheumatologists.
