Lotta Granholm, PhD/DDS: Dr. Lotta Granholm-Bentley is a Professor in Department of Neurosurgery and a native of Sweden. She first came to CU as a postdoc in 1985 and returned to CU in 2021 after faculty positions at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and University of Denver. She has a background in histology and has lately focused mostly on neuropathology of neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Granholm-Bentley has an h-index of 66 and has been cited more than 15,000 times.
My lab is focused on mechanisms associated with neurodegeneration, in particular Parkinson’s disease (PD), mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), Down syndrome (DS), and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Current grant funding includes an R01 from the NIA on biomarkers for athlete-induced mTBIs (Granholm lead PI) and an R01 from the NIH focused on intracranial autografts of sural nerve in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The latter is a collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Kentucky to examine the effects of intracranial autografts of sural nerve tissue in patients with PD. It is known that peripheral nerves have an inherent ability to regenerate, contrary to nerves in the brain. We are utilizing this regenerative ability with significant clinical results. The Granholm group is focused on examining the postmortem pathology of patients with PD, AD, and sural nerve grafts, as well as the development of biomarkers for neurodegenerative conditions and neurotrauma. I am the lead investigator for an international consortium of brain banks which includes 11 sites in the USA, Europe and India.
