Global Neurosurgery in Uganda

The team’s work in Tanzania expanded to Uganda, beginning with neurosurgeons attending the international symposium at MOI with hopes of collaboration and assistance.

Neurosurgery in Uganda

CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda began training surgeons on the use of flexible endoscopy. After formal training, the surgeon could then take the flexible endoscope and monitor tower to their home hospital and continue performing surgeries for hydrocephalus. CU Anschutz faculty recognized an opportunity to expand neurosurgical training and started a training program in advanced neurosurgical endoscopy in Tanzania.

Neurocritical Care in Uganda

In Mbarara, there is a general ICU, but no neurosurgical ICU. Efforts to improve the education of critical care providers and nursing staff is underway and includes bedside teaching and live and virtual didactic sessions. Equipment and textbook donations also help increase the success of these efforts and the care of neurosurgical patients in Mbarara.

Neurosurgery Conference in Uganda

In 2024, the CU Anschutz global neurosurgery team developed an international teaching conference for neurosurgeons, critical care faculty, residents, and nursing staff in Mbarara, Uganda. The conference includes lectures, hands-on training, and OR demonstrations.
