Neurosurgical Advancements in Bolivia
The University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine Neurocritical Care collaboration with the Solidarity Bridge Neurosurgery & Neurology Institute began in 2024 and continues to expand through ongoing clinical and educational initiatives. This work is led alongside Dr. Richard Moser, president of the Neurosurgery and Neurology Initiative and leader of the Neurotrauma Initiative.
Each year, neurocritical care providers, neuroanesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary specialists from CU Anschutz School of Medicine travel to Hospital Santa Bárbara in Sucre to provide lectures, hands-on workshops, bedside education, and collaborative clinical teaching alongside Bolivian attending physicians, residents, and nurses. The partnership emphasizes sustainable capacity building in neurocritical care, neuroanesthesia, rehabilitation, and perioperative management of neurologic injury.
Beyond the annual in-country collaboration, CU Anschutz School of Medicine faculty engage with Bolivian colleagues virtually throughout the year with case-based teaching conferences and educational sessions. These sessions foster ongoing mentorship, multidisciplinary discussion, and bidirectional knowledge exchange focused on improving outcomes for patients with neurotrauma and other neurologic disease processes.
The Bolivia collaboration reflects CU Anschutz School of Medicine's broader commitment to sustainable global neurosurgery and critical care partnerships centered on education, clinical collaboration, research, and strengthening systems of neurologic care in resource-limited settings.
