Sports Medicine Composite - Class of 2024

Name: Anna Buehler, MD

Primary Board Certification: Internal Medicine

Residency: University of Colorado

Medical School: University of California, San Diego School of Medicine

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

The University of Colorado fellowship stands out for a number of reasons. The curriculum is well- rounded including exposure to a broad patient population, dedicated procedure and MSK ultrasound training, a month-long rotation at a local ski clinic, sports coverage at all levels and opportunities to learn from faculty in each of the sports medicine specialties. I loved that there are multiple fellows and each from a different background (Primary Care, EM, Pediatrics and PM&R) which provides both camaraderie and constant opportunities to learn from each other’s unique skill sets. The faculty members are genuine, supportive and leaders in the field. I believe training at the University of Colorado will more than prepare me for a career in sports medicine in a way that allows me to be both competitive and true to my unique interests.

Name: Nathan Howell, MD

Primary Board Certification: Pediatrics

Residency: University of Colorado

Medical School: Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

I knew that it was important for me to have a broad training experience, particularly coming through pediatric residency. The program here at University of Colorado offered me a great experience in both pediatric and adult sports medicine care, as well as exposure to fracture care and ultrasound that will equip me well for my future career. The coverage opportunities, including everything from high school and youth sports to Olympic and Professional athletes, also provide perspective as I think about how I will shape my practice after graduation. All of the fellows bring different experiences to the table and I get to learn with and from each of them.

Name: Yana Klein, DO

Primary Board Certification: Emergency Medicine

Residency: Loyola University Medical Center

Medical School: Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

CU offered me everything I was looking for in a sports medicine fellowship!

Through a dedicated Sports Medicine EM track, I have the opportunity to build upon my Emergency Medicine foundation and its unique role in the sports medicine world while also training with a diverse and exceptional group of colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. This program offers a comprehensive curriculum with exposure to a variety of team coverage, practices, and mentorship. My training will allow me to hone my skills and build new ones whether it be addressing acute MSK sports related injuries in Winter Park, learning innovative approaches to US guided injections, or helping my athletes to optimize their performance and return to play.

Most importantly, CU Sports Medicine fosters an incredibly support community that I was drawn to. The fellows, leadership team, and faculty all made me feel incredibly welcomed and valued which is the key to building my success in this field.

As someone born and raised in the area, I have dreamed of the day when I would return to take care of athletes from all walks of life in my home community... not to mention all of the volleyball, hiking, and skiing I can get back to as well!

Name: Mani Singh, MD

Primary Board Certification: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Residency: New York-Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia/Cornell)

Medical School: The University of Texas at Houston McGovern Medical School

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

The University of Colorado is a one-of-a-kind program. The first thing that stood out to me was the interdisciplinary infrastructure. You get a chance to learn from Sports Medicine physicians with backgrounds in PM&R, Primary Care, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine across a variety of clinical settings. There are also high-level sideline coverage opportunities built in to the program at professional, collegiate, high-school, and community levels of competition – not to mention a winter sports/ski rotation where you learn to manage acute injuries. Procedural training was another huge factor for me – specifically, training in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, and fluoroscopy. Last but not least, I chose CU for the people – they are truly what makes this fellowship great!
