Kana Maeji, DO

Primary Board Certification: Family Medicine

Residency: University of Hawaii

Medical School: Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine – NY

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

The University of Colorado fellowship is a well-rounded, established program that offers a robust curriculum including procedures and MSK US training. The faculty are pioneers within the field of sports medicine and come from different backgrounds. I was looking for a program that would provide exposure to different levels of sports coverage, from HS to professional level. I like to collaborate with peers of different primary specialties and having the opportunity to work with 3 co-fellows with backgrounds in EM, pediatrics, and PM&R was a huge draw.

Daniel Truong, DO

Primary Board Certification: Pediatrics

Residency: University of Hawaii Pediatric Residency

Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

I love the well-rounded experience you are offered as a pediatric trained resident. You get a good mixture of both adult and children in a variety of different levels including high school, college, and professional sports. I also am very interested in the wilderness and outdoor medicine experience up in the mountains at Winter Park which I am looking forward to!

Ryan A. Keenan, MD

Primary Board Certification: Emergency Medicine

Residency: University of Pennsylvania

Medical School: Wake Forest School of Medicine

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

The sports medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado satisfies the key requirements of my ideal fellowship as it pertains to my ultimate career goal, becoming an EM boarded team physician. First, the full spectrum of patient populations, from pediatrics through adults and from amateur to elite/professional athletes, provides an exceptional training opportunity to graduate with a comprehensive foundation for my future practice.   Secondly, the presence of an established and dedicated emergency medicine track not only acknowledges the unique skill set of emergency within the sports medicine realm, but also allows for augmentation of the skills I have gained throughout my residency. Further, on interview day I felt a sense of comradery and interprofessional/inter-specialty collaboration that gave me a feeling of teamwork and support which would allow me to maximize my learning during fellowship.  Obviously, I would be remiss to overlook my personal attraction to Denver’s unique environment and lifestyle, with the ability to enjoy the perks of city life and to escape the city for the nearby wilderness.  Ultimately, this fellowship will afford me the opportunity to succeed in the sports medicine career that I set out in pursuit of when I initially applied to medical school.

Marc Heronemus, MD

Primary Board Certification: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Residency: University of Colorado

Medical School: University of Kansas

Why did you select the University of Colorado to complete your Sports Medicine Fellowship training?

I chose the University of Colorado because of the opportunities to work with multiple different groups of Sports Medicine physicians, including Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency, PM&R and Orthopedics. The diverse exposure to sideline coverage and hands-on procedural training were highlights of the program. Finally, Colorado offers endless opportunities for both extreme sports and leisure activities for both my patients and me!
