Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic

The Imagine Clinic is an LGBTQ+ specialty clinic that was founded in 2016 and will be offering a minor rotation for the first time for the 2026-2027 internship class. The goal of the clinic was to offer clinical care informed in LGBTQ+ history and communities as a means of improving the quality of care and experiences of individuals regardless of their presenting needs. The clinic is embedded into the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic which allows for close collaboration with providers and clinics across the CU Medicine and UCHealth systems. Imagine offers comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, and gender affirming presurgical evaluations. The clinic prides itself on being informed and affirming in many LGBTQ+ issues including coming out, relationships, living with HIV, transitioning, sexuality, supporting a loved one who is LGBTQ+ and identity exploration.

This rotation provides interns with the opportunity to learn about the unique clinical needs of this population and develop clinical skills in providing affirming care in any setting. Interns will have the opportunity to provide individual therapy. Additionally, couples' therapy and group-based services are also available, if of interest. Interns will work alongside our psychiatry residents, often engaging in collaborative care for patients with both psychotherapy and medication needs. Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to work across the hospital system and support care within medical settings, as needed. Interns will develop skills in clinical interviewing, differential diagnosis, case conceptualization, and treatment planning. Patient care is rooted in humanistic clinical care with emphasis on solution focused approaches and measurement-based care.

The Imagine Clinic is a small clinic currently consisting of one psychologist (Dr. Christina New)and four psychiatry residents. We work as part of the broader Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, so additional opportunities to consult with other clinicians in different areas of specialty are always available.

The objective of this rotation is to provide interns with experience in clinically supporting LGBTQ+ populations and to gain knowledge on the unique needs among this population.

At the end of the rotation, interns will be able to:

Complete a comprehensive clinical interview and engage in diagnostic consideration/differential diagnosis.
Develop case conceptualizations with consideration of how identity and identity development impact patient presentations.
Utilize appropriate measures to assess current functioning and progress.
Develop an understanding of outpatient care and considerations specific to LGBTQ+ populations.
Reference WPATH Standards of Care, as needed, for clinical care.
Conduct presurgical readiness evaluations for gender affirming surgeries and compose letter of endorsement.
Provide integrative therapeutic services including focus on cognitive, behavioral and humanistic therapies with consideration of queer theory.

There may also be opportunities to develop patient educational materials, facilitate professional presentations and collaborate on research of patient outcomes, if of interest.

We serve adult patients of all ages and backgrounds seeking LGBTQ+ specialty care with a range of psychiatric needs. An initial evaluation is conducted to understand the nature of the referral and needs. Following this, patients may develop a treatment plan within our clinic or possibly be referred out for other clinical care focused on their specific needs. Recognizing the amazing resources we have for other specialty care here on campus (i.e., trauma focused work, depression management, etc.) we try to prioritize clinically supporting issues unique to this population.

Rotation is available to interns who can provide clinical care on Mondays and/or Fridays.

Interns are required to be in person and on site while providing clinical care (Anschutz Campus).
Attendance of weekly individual supervision and biweekly group supervision is requested.
Interns will see patients independently and in conjunction with a supervising psychologist as appropriate.
