4th Annual Research Symposium and D’Ambrosia Diversity Lectureship

| 07:30 AM - 06:30 PM

This conference will be a hybrid format, with the in-person component taking place at the Hyatt Regency Aurora-Denver Conference Center. Attendees have the option to attend virtually as well.

We are excited to announce the 4th Annual CU Orthopedic Research Symposium and D’Ambrosia Diversity Lectureship, scheduled for Wednesday, October 5th, 2022. This event will include plenary lectures, pre-and post-doctoral trainee presentations, and two poster sessions. Pre-and post-doctoral trainee awards recognizing the best research will be presented. We aim to grow from the inaugural event, which welcomed more than 200 attendees and 100 posters featuring top science from The University of Colorado Department of Orthopedics, five other departments in the CU system, and other universities along with the front range including CSU, Colorado School of Mines, University of Northern Colorado, and the University of New Mexico.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Michael Parks will anchor the event as the D’Ambrosia Diversity Keynote Lecturer. Dr. Michael Parks specializes in the surgical treatment of adults with arthritis requiring reconstructive procedures of the hip and knee. He is actively involved in clinical research and is the author of multiple publications. His research focus is on joint replacement surgery, biomechanical implant retrievals, and on the impact of race, ethnicity, and gender on the care of arthritis patients. He graduated from Duke University with an undergraduate degree in chemistry and Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for medical school, where he received the President’s Clinical Science Award. After completing an internship in general and thoracic surgery followed by an orthopedic residency at Duke University Medical Center, he continued his training at Hospital for Special Surgery with a fellowship in the Hip and Knee Service. Dr. Parks is now an Associate Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at HSS and an Associate Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Parks currently serves as Immediate Past President of the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons and on the Board of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation. He has served as a member of The Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and is on the steering committee of the Movement is Life Caucus, a multi-stakeholder group devoted to decreasing musculoskeletal healthcare disparities.

Dr. Jonathan Schoenecker has been selected as our Scientific Keynote Lecturer. Jonathan Schoenecker, MD, Ph.D., is the Associate Professor of Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Pathology, and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN.  He is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon with a strong interest in defining the role of the vascular system in bone biology. This focus stems from his surgical training in musculoskeletal diseases in combination with basic science training in vascular and bone biology. From his observations in clinical practice combined with historical work defining vascularity in bone biology and studies conducted in his lab, he developed the hypothesis that the reason the skeleton of a child is more resilient to bone fragility and has a greater capacity to heal is due to differences of a child’s capacity to produce and maintain blood vessels. Dr. Schoenecker’s clinical research is focused on pathologic processes of bone in children with a presumed vascular etiology such as; Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, avascular necrosis, fracture non-union, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, osteosarcoma and infection-induced bone necrosis. The goal of these studies is to define how changes in vascularity impose subsequent pathology in bone biology with the long-term hope of addressing the vascular insult to prevent or treat these devastating diseases in children.

Registration and abstract submissions open on June 1. The abstract submission deadline is Aug 2nd.
