Study Information: This project focuses on patients with hospital-onset sepsis, who experience higher rates of respiratory failure and death than patients with community-onset sepsis, yet remain understudied. Using granular electronic health record data, unsupervised and supervised machine learning, and causal inference methods, this project aims to (1) identify clinically important latent phenotypes among patients with hospital-onset sepsis, (2) predict progression to acute respiratory failure in this population, and (3) identify high-risk patient subgroups by examining heterogeneity of treatment effect on the risk of respiratory failure from hospital-onset sepsis. The goal of this work is to inform future precision treatment approaches and improve outcomes for these vulnerable patients.

Study Information: This is a multi-center cohort study that identifies whether a new screening tool (5-item decision tree) is more effective than previous tools (Yale 3-ounce water swallow test and Toronto Bedside Swallowing Screening Test) in determining which acute respiratory failure survivor patients are at a high-risk for post-extubation aspiration. This study also identifies subphenotypes of patients with post-extubation aspiration to determine their trajectory of recovery.
