About Our Program

The University of Colorado Sleep Medicine Fellowship is a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - accredited program with continuous accreditation since 2008. We have trained over 30 fellows who now practice sleep medicine across the country in a variety of clinical settings. We train two fellows per academic year, and our fellows rotate at nationally ranked medical institutions in the Denver metropolitan area. Our faculty are recognized leaders in the field of sleep medicine with specialty training in internal medicine, pediatrics, pulmonology, neurology, otolaryngology, and psychology. We are enthusiastic about the field of sleep and are dedicated to the education and success of our fellows. We aim to train outstanding sleep medicine physicians who will advance and contribute to the field.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the University of Colorado Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program. We are a passionate group of clinicians and medical educators committed to training the next generation of leaders in sleep. We continually strive to provide excellent patient care and to advance knowledge in our field. As a group, we recognize the importance of healthy and adequate sleep in virtually all aspects of medical care and work hard to advocate for our patients’ sleep health.

Fellows who train with our program will encounter faculty from a wide variety of clinical backgrounds. Many of our faculty are active participants in sleep research and quality improvement measures. We offer expertise in a wide range of sleep topics and enthusiastically invite our fellows to participate in our endeavors. We support and foster our fellows’ own ideas and curiosities as they embark on their unique, individualized careers in sleep medicine. As a former graduate of this program, I can attest to the well-rounded clinical training I received and the inviting and enthusiastic culture which propelled me to engage further in the field.

As they hone their clinical skills, fellows in our program have the advantage of living in one of the best cities in America. They enjoy the rich culture of the city, with proximity to the Rocky Mountains and some of nature’s most beautiful sights and outdoor activities. Our fellows rotate at four different clinical sites: University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Colorado, National Jewish Hospital, and Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center. Fellows are exposed to a diverse patient population and wide range of sleep disorders. They evaluate and manage patients with obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, insomnia, sleep-related movement disorders, circadian rhythm disorders, and pediatric sleep disorders. Our fellows learn to interpret an array of sleep tests including in-laboratory polysomnography, various home sleep testing modalities, multiple sleep latency tests, maintenance of wakefulness tests, and PAP titration studies at both the adult and pediatric sites. Fellows also rotate with adult and pediatric behavioral sleep medicine specialists, and dental sleep medicine specialists in the community.

We are proud to offer the following highly specialized clinical experiences in our training curriculum:

We have two sleep surgeons who are fellowship trained and double boarded in sleep medicine and otolaryngology. Fellows rotate in sleep surgery clinic with exposure to hypoglossal nerve stimulation from initial evaluation to implantation to postop follow up. We offer surgical training pathways for eligible otolaryngology candidates.

Non-Clinical Training

Fellows in our program participate in weekly Sleep Medicine Conference at Anschutz Medical Campus. This includes Case Conference, Journal Club, and Sleep Medicine Grand Rounds. Fellows also receive weekly didactic instruction from our most senior faculty. At the beginning of the academic year, fellows attend Pediatric Sleep Medicine Bootcamp and the University of Colorado Boulder’s Circadian Rhythm Summer School.

We highly value the scholarly activity of our fellows and faculty. As such, our fellows complete a year-long scholarly project under the mentorship of one of our experienced sleep medicine faculty members. Fellows in our program attend the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Quality and Safety Academy (QSA) with the opportunity to achieve QSA Certification. With this training, fellows are encouraged to participate in and present a quality improvement measure during their fellowship year.

How to Apply

We select highly motivated, dedicated, and enthusiastic individuals interested in becoming excellent sleep physicians and contributing to the field. This program is open to physicians who have completed residency training in Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Child Neurology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Anesthesiology, or Otolaryngology. Candidates for our program must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card). Exceptions will be considered for highly competitive J1 and H1B candidates.

Applicants must demonstrate successful completion of USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 (or equivalent). Three letters of recommendation are required, including one letter from a program director, division head, or department chair. Applications must include a CV, Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), and personal statement.

We accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). We are listed in the ACGME under Sleep Medicine as: University of Colorado Program # 5200714103. Interviews will be held virtually for all invited candidates.
