Multi-Disciplinary Research Training in Respiratory Disease Expectations for Mentors of Trainees Funded on T-32

  • Research Advisory Committee (RAC) - mentorship committee
    • Within 2 months of the initiation of T32 support, assist the trainee in establishing a mentorship committee, consisting of 3-4 faculty members, including primary mentor
    • RAC meetings should occur every 6 months (April/November)
    • Discuss progress and plans for research and career development, with minutes taken by designated individual (not trainee or mentor). Minutes forwarded to Kelly Rico/Cheryl Loudd within two weeks.
  • Responsible Conduct of Research: offered by Office of Research Compliance
    • Ensure trainee is enrolled/compliant with RCR as required for participation in the T32

  • Annual Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR)
    • Provide required research summary information for NIH annual progress report in March of each year
  • Ensure trainee has ≥75% of time devoted to research (up to 3 years of support)
  • Weekly 1:1 meeting with trainees 
    • Standing scheduled meeting (30-60 min) with opportunity for additional ad hoc communications
    • Establish frequency/duration of meetings with secondary mentor(s) 

  • Individualized Career Development Plan (IDP) (updated every March 1)
    • Support creation of IDP, to include trainee’s educational and professional development plans
    • Define goals and objectives for the academic year, including TIMELINE
    • Delineate support in time and in kind that the trainee can expect from primary mentor and other members of the trainee’s mentoring team
  • Didactic training
    • T32 provides $4,500 non-degree coursework OR $16,000 degree seeking support per year
    • Identify coursework/degree program relevant to the trainee’s career development
  • Research in Progress (Friday morning)
    • Support trainee in creating/refining presentation for RIP once a year
    • Attend trainee’s presentation, and other relevant presentations at this seminar series.
    • Trainees are expected to attend at least 75% of the RIPs – please encourage this throughout T32 support
  • National/international meetings/workshops ($1400/year to trainee) and networking
    • Support trainee in identifying relevant meetings and workshops
    • Support trainee in abstract/presentation for the meeting/workshop
    • Provide introductions/networking opportunities to trainee attending meeting/workshop
    • Encourage and facilitate meetings of fellow with visiting professors
  • Manuscripts/Presentations
    • Provide prompt (within 2 weeks), actionable feedback to manuscript drafts, and presentation outlines
    • Provide expectations and timeline for original manuscript publication(s)
  • Grant writing
    • Identify grant opportunities relevant to trainee
    • Provide oversight/feedback of trainee grant applications
    • Support fellow in construction of NRSA to be submitted by end of first year of T32 support, if not sooner
    • Encourage fellow to attend Pre-F and/or Pre-K mock study sections (through CCTSI)
    • Support trainee to apply for NIH loan deferment (www.lrp.nih.gov) during year 2 of the award
