Critical Care Fellowship

University of Colorado Denver Department of Neurosurgery is seeking applications for out CAST accredited Neurocritical Care Fellowship Positions. We seek board-eligible or certified neurologists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, or critical care physicians who are interested in subspecialty training in neurocritical care. Two-year fellowship positions are available in the Neuroscience Critical Care Program beginning July 1, 2015. Clinical training will focus on direct bedside patient care incorporating innovative diagnostic and treatment strategies in a broad spectrum of critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients. Teaching and supervision of medical students and housestaff as well as team management are an integral part of training. Participation in clinical and/or experimental laboratory research is an important component of the program.

The main site of practice will be University of Colorado Hospital, a 551 bed tertiary care center in Aurora, Colorado, located just outside of Denver. The Campus is home to a multispecialty academic center, The Cancer Institute, Rocky Mountain Eye Institute, Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, Nighthorse-Campbell Center for Native American Health, as well as the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Physicial Therapy. Within the Neuroscience Center are specialty programs in Cerebrovascular, Epilepsy, and Neuro-oncology, Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromuscular, and Spine, as well as general Neurology and Neurosurgery. Research opportunities in bench, translational and clinical environments continue to expand with our program growth.

The Program Director of the Neurocritical Care fellowship is board certified in Neurology, Vascular Neurology and Neurocritical Care. The Neuroscience Center currently has a Vascular Neurology (stroke) fellowship which is a one year program, with potential to combine with the Neurocritical Care fellowship for a 3-year program. UCH is a Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke Center. Additional faculty support for the Neurocritical Care unit comes from the Neurosurgery department, with eight faculty at UCH full-time, and another 4 that provide coverage at one of our 3 partner hospitals and part-time UCH coverage. There is also a full-time Neurocritical Care Nurse Practitioner who provides additional staff coverage Friday, Saturday and Sundays. The 24 bed Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit is the only dedicated Neurocritical Care unit in the Rocky Mountain Region. the NeuroICU is staffed by 2 fellowship trained and board certified Neurocritical Care Specialists. With over 1,300 admissions to our Neuro ICU last year, our average daily ICU census is 14 patients, with overflow into the adjoining Burn/Trauma ICU, SICU and MICU. We also have an 18-bed Neuroscience and Epilepsy monitoring unit. The program provides diagnostic and therapeutic expertise to a broad spectrum of stroke, hemorrhage, aneurysm, neurodegenerative, trauma, epilepsy and tumor patients. Quality outcome measures are consistently well above national averages.

The dynamic environment affords fellows a premier opportunity to learn, develop and lead in the emerging and expanding field of Neurocritical care. Individual’s goals and career path interests are tailored into the fellowship experience. Research is an intrinsic element of the program, with options to engage in sponsored studies or create your own. Upon completion of this fellowship, the applicant will be skilled not only in Neurocritical care, but also a broad range of intensive care management.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of a neurology, neurosurgery, anesthesia, or internal medicine residency with ABPN certification/eligibility or similar ABMS specialty certification. The applicant must also possess United States Citizenship and qualifications to obtain a Colorado medical license. Preference will be given to those not currently holding or seeking Visa status.
