New Charitable Gift Tax Deductions
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic
Security Act (CARES Act) of 2020 provided incentives that encouraged
charitable giving during a time of the COVID hardship. With the demands
on charities increasing, the government extended these tax incentives
for 2021 under the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA), signed into
law by the President on December 27, 2020.
- Donors who do not itemize deductions on their taxes can now deduct up to $300 (individuals) or $600 (eligible couples) in cash gifts.
- Donors of cash gifts can now deduct up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income (does not apply to gifts contributed to donor-advised funds).
