Neuro-Oncology Fellowship Program

The Neuro-Oncology Fellowship is an UCNS Accredited program designed to provide the clinical, didactic and academic training to complete the education and training necessary for independent practice in neuro-oncology as well as develop an advanced level of competence in the specialty of neuro-oncology. The program consists of two years of training:
- The first year is dedicated to clinical neuro-oncology, concentrating on primary and metastatic brain tumors in outpatient and inpatient settings, paraneoplastic disorders, and neurological complications of cancer.
- The second year is designed to provide fellows with an opportunity for clinical research as well as a more independent management of neuro-oncology cases with decreasing staff supervision. There are also opportunities for interactions with various clinical and basic science faculty in order for the fellow to develop individual interests.
Fellows have the opportunity to participate in the clinical research activities of this institution and, through treatment consortia, to gain experience in clinical trial design and execution, drug development, regulatory aspects of trials and development of strategies that hold promise in brain tumor therapy. They are also encouraged to participate in neuro-oncology practice improvement initiatives. Specific training goals include:
- Advanced skill in the medical evaluation, treatment and consultation to patients and professionals sufficient to practice on an independent basis.
- Advanced understanding of the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors, neurologic complications of systemic cancer, and paraneoplastic syndromes.
- Scholarly activity; e.g., submission of a study or literature review for publication, presentation, submission of a grant proposal or outcome assessment
- Eligibility for subspecialty certification in neuro-oncology.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must possess a current valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States or Canada or its territories.
- Applicants must be a graduate of an ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accredited residency program in: 1) neurology, 2) child neurology, 3) neurological surgery, 4) internal medicine and medical oncology, or 5) pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology.
- Applicants must be board certified or eligible for certification in a primary ABMS or RCPSC specialty 1) neurology, 2) neurosurgery, 3) medical or pediatric oncology, 4) radiation oncology, or 5) neuropathology.
- Applicants must have successfully completed USMLE/COMLEX steps 1, 2, and 3.
- All applicants for non-ACGME Fellowship programs must be eligible for and must obtain a full Colorado Medical License prior to the start of the Fellowship program. The Neuro-Oncology Fellowship participates in the SF Match. Because our program length is two years, we will only participate in SF Match every other year.
