Musculoskeletal Radiology & Intervention

Mission

The mission of the Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention section (MSK) is to bring the highest quality subspecialty musculoskeletal radiology expertise to the interpretation of MRI, CT, radiographs, and ultrasound studies as well as to the performance of a broad range of interventional procedures. We strive to serve our patients and referring providers with excellence in a collaborative and educational environment. Many of our reading rooms are embedded centrally within the clinic spaces of our referring providers, reflecting the focus on a team approach and direct patient contact.

Patient Care

The MSK section consists of eight full-time, fellowship-trained radiologists and two physician assistants. We support a fellowship in MSK radiology as well. Our section performs over 100,000 diagnostic exams every year, including approximately 15,000 MRI studies. Clinical cases include those referred from Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Spine Surgery, Oncology, Primary Care, Rheumatology, and Infectious Disease. In addition, we provide formal consultation services and procedures for inpatients at the University of Colorado Hospital. Many of our reading rooms are embedded within sports medicine and orthopedic clinics. We also provide an outpatient MSK clinic to support our procedural service.

Our section provides imaging and procedural services for local Denver NFL, NHL, NBA, MLS and NCAA teams.

We utilize multiple CT and MRI scanners at the hospital, as well as at numerous clinics and imaging centers around the Denver metro area and Colorado front range.

Our section also provides a robust procedural service employing CT, fluoroscopy, and US guidance. Selected procedures include:

  • Joint Injections
  • Epidural/facet injections
  • Bone, soft tissue, and bone marrow biopsies
  • Vertebral augmentation (kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty)
  • Radiofrequency Ablation
  • Cryoablation
  • Epidural Blood Patch

Our section participates in several interdisciplinary conferences, including weekly orthopedic spine conference, weekly sarcoma conference, weekly limb preservation conference, and bi-weekly orthopedic tumor conference, to name a few.

Education

The MSK section offers two fully funded fellowship positions annually. More information can be found on our dedicated fellowship page.

The MSK section has synthesized a core curriculum for resident education consisting of regular core lectures spanning a 2-year cycle. All of the MSK faculty are active with regular case conferences and didactics, and are passionate about resident, fellow, and medical student education. We consistently have multiple residents rotating through our service (under the guidance of resident education director, James Korf, MD), and will often have medical students rotating through our service as a part of their clinical rotations.

Research

Our section publishes research on both diagnostic and procedural topics, with faculty and trainees regularly presenting at national meetings, including SSR and RSNA. Many of our projects include collaboration with other clinical departments throughout the CU campus.
