Faculty within the Division of Radiological Sciences are clinical medical physicists providing services to UCHealth facilities in the Denver Metro area and Children’s Hospital of Colorado. We have roles in patient care, education, and research and are actively involved in developing national standards and guidelines to advance patient care and the practice of clinical medical physics.
Our faculty are certified through specialty boards in their area of expertise, including diagnostic, MRI, and nuclear physics and MRI safety.
Patient Care
We are committed to ensuring all patients receive high-quality, safe imaging exams and nuclear medicine treatments. Our work starts with regulatory compliance and extends to numerous activities that enhance patient care, including:
· Monitoring and optimization of patient radiation doses from imaging exams, including CT and fluoroscopy
· Personalized patient dosimetry for nuclear medicine therapies
· Development and optimization of imaging protocolsOngoing MRI and radiation safety training for staff
· MRI safety assessment and scanning of implanted devices
· Patient and staff communication about radiation risk
· Specialized expertise in safe imaging of all patients, including pediatric and pregnant patients
Our faculty provides physics instruction for medical students, medical residents, technologists, sonographers, and undergraduate and graduate bioengineering students. We provide education and mentorship on the local and national levels. The CU imaging physics residency program is expected to start July 2026.
Radiological Sciences faculty supports research efforts across the Anschutz campus with key roles at the Brain Imaging Center, the Research Imaging Center, and the CU Environmental Health & Safety. Research in the division includes work with:
· Photon-counting and dual-energy CT
· Deep learning in clinical image quality assessment
· Quantitative MRI, fMRI, MRI biomarkers, and other advanced MRI techniques
· MRI neuroimaging
· Ultrasound image optimization
· PET lesion detection
· Image display quality management
· Radiation safety and risk communication
Service activities start with our clinical and academic partners at University of Colorado Health, Children’s Hospital of Colorado, and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. We are actively involved with regional and national groups, with a focus on practice guideline development, medical physics education, quality, safety, and the professional practice of medical physics.
