Vascular and Interventional Radiology

The Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (IR) at the University of Colorado provides cutting edge minimally invasive procedural care to patients with a wide range of medical conditions. The IR division is world renowned for leading major clinical breakthroughs going back to the early inception of this rapidly evolving specialty. Our practice combines the latest innovations in imaging and device technology, with longstanding specialized clinical expertise to deliver compassionate and multi-disciplinary care.

Mission

The Vascular & Interventional Radiology Division has a clear mission: to provide world class minimally invasive procedural care by combining the latest developments in clinical research, translational science and technology development.

Patient Care

The IR Division specializes in offering routine and high complexity care at the sole academic medical center within the state of Colorado. We also treat patients at Highlands Ranch Hospital, office based laboratory in Highlands Ranch and our ambulatory surgical center in Lowry. As such the division performs more than 8000 procedures a year with a team of specialized physicians that collectively offer broad and deep expertise.  We offer an inpatient consult service, short stay admission unit, robust outpatient clinic and longitudinal care with a diverse team of physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurse coordinators. Additionally, we participate in various multidisciplinary conferences and clinics to ensure that our patients gain from the collective expertise of medical and surgical specialists across the Anschutz campus. Conditions for which we offer treatment include:

  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Acute and chronic venous disease
  • Hemodialysis access creation and dysfunction
  • Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations/Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia
  • Knee pain (genicular artery embolization)
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostate artery embolization)
  • Uterine fibroids and pelvic congestion syndrome
  • Thyroid RFA and ethanol ablation
  • Hemmorhoidal bleeding (Emborrhoid procedure)
  • Biliary stones and strictures, including cholangioscopic interventions
  • Portal hypertension (TIPS, BRTO)
  • Pulmonary embolism thrombectomy/thrombolysis
  • Liver and kidney cancer (Y90, TACE, Ablation)
  • Trauma/bleeding
  • Vascular malformations
  • Pain treatments (pain pumps, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, soft tissue ablation and denervation)

We welcome consultations from patients and referring physicians to learn more about treatments offered and hope to be of service.

Education

Education resides at the core of our divisional mission. Our objective is to nurture and graduate the highest caliber interventional radiologists so that the latest innovations are disseminated near and far to patients in need.  Our residents gain exposure to one of the broadest mix of procedures, spanning vascular, oncologic, hepatobiliary, dialysis, pain/palliative, genitourinary, and gastrointestinal disorders. Moreover, they have unique opportunities to gain hands-on experience in pediatric and neurointerventional procedures. Further enriching their learning is participation in longitudinal outpatient clinic, multidisciplinary conferences, inpatient consult service in both academic and community settings.

Research

Research in the IR division involves participation in numerous national clinical trials, foundational development of new minimally invasive procedures and NIH-funded population health outcomes research. Our research is driven by our clinical experience and aims to address unmet patient needs. As such, it fuels continuous improvements in care delivery for our patients while remaining at the cutting edge of innovation within our specialty.
