Overview
Our goal is to train an independently practicing neurotologist who is knowledgeable, capable, competent, self-critical, inquisitive, ethical, and compassionate. Upon successful completion of the program, our fellow will have a contemporary knowledge of the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of diseases, disorders, and conditions that pertain to neurotology and the surgical procedures considered essential for the practice of neurotology as outlined by the ACGME Neurotology program requirements. They will have demonstrated competency in all core ACGME competencies including patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, Interpersonal and communication skills, systems-based practice and professionalism.
The fellows will graduate with the understanding that their learning is a lifelong process and will be equipped with the ability and desire to continue that learning. Our goal is to train neurotologists, academic and otherwise, who will continue to innovate and add to the knowledge of our field. We seek applicants who have demonstrated clinical competence and a strong research track record as part of their residency programs.
There is a rigorous didactic program for fellow education, and the fellow has one day per week of protected time for research. Education will occur both in informal and formal settings. Informal teaching occurs throughout each day during clinical encounters and surgical cases. This teaching will be case- (or patient-) based, and faculty will incorporate education during medical/surgical assessments, decision making, and development of surgical skills. Direct, timely, informal feedback are incorporated into these settings. Formal education will occur through the following organized events. The fellow is expected to be a team player and take on teaching and supervisory roles with the otolaryngology residents.
Research and Scholarly Activities/Requirements
Scholarly activity is expected of the neurotology fellow, and they can choose a project of personal interest, which may be an ongoing or new project. In addition to faculty mentorship, the fellows are enrolled in a research methodology and biostatistics course, and the department has several professional research assistants who are available to support the fellows’ research endeavors.
