Reid is a 4th year extern at UCHealth Audiology Clinic in Aurora, Colorado. He attends the University of Kansas Medical Center and is in his last year of classes before obtaining his Audiology degree. During his college career, Reid helped to establish a Newborn Hearing Screening program that works with the Audiologists at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. Serving children with hearing loss is very important to Reid, as he was diagnosed with hearing loss at five years old. When it came time to select a college after high school, Reid chose to attend Gallaudet University. Gallaudet is the only university in America that uses ASL as its main mode of communication, and Reid welcomed the opportunity to attend and learn ASL. Being a part of the Deaf community has provided Reid with a strong framework that will help him care for patients that are struggling with a hearing loss and communication skills.
Reid is collaborating with Dr. Madeline Horan, AuD, on organizing the pre-existing materials that exist within the UCHealth Audiology Clinic, as these materials are an important part of providing clear and organized information to patients. In addition, he and the team will be working to incorporate additional educational materials as well as having the materials translated into common languages for the diverse population served in the audiology clinic. The goal is to assist with patient education, minimizing patient confusion and improving patient lives with amplification.
On hearing the news about this award, Reid says "I am having so much fun being at extern at UC Health Audiology, and I am very grateful to be receiving this award. Everyone in the department is so fun to work with and it makes me excited to show up to work every day."
Reid's commitment to working with patients who suffer from hearing loss will have a great impact on our community and beyond. Congratulations, Reid!
The endowment was made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Richard Wyant with matching support from the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery in the School of Medicine located on the Anschutz Medical Campus.
