This project will investigate the feasibility and acceptability of developing a new mHealth app to support the management of T1D in Latino adolescents. The objective of this study is to help Latino teens manage their T1D by offering strengths-based, culturally sensitive tools to build knowledge and facilitate self-efficacy and planning.
When:
Beginning in December of 2023.
We are looking for:
- 30 Latino adolescents (12-20 yrs) with Type 1 diabetes seen at the BDC.
- Caregivers that usually or always measures or administers insulin.
Inclusion:
- Patients seen at the BDC, with a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, and their caregivers.
- Patient aged 12-20 years at time of recruitment
- Latino/Hispanic
- Spanish-speaking and/or bilingual parent(s) or caregiver(s)
- Have access to and can operate a smart phone or tablet
- Family willingness to participate in a clinical study and attend visits at a study site.
Exclusion:
- Patients seen at BDC with other than Type 1 diabetes diagnosis (e.g. MODY, Type 2, Medication induced diabetes, genetic forms of diabetes)
- Patients without access and/or ability to use the technology needed to access the app.
- Significant developmental or cognitive disorder in patient.
- Significant mental illness in parent/guardian that would interfere with ability to give consent or participate.
- Failure to understand study requirements.

Este proyecto investigará la viabilidad y aceptabilidad de desarrollar una nueva aplicación mHealth para apoyar el manejo de la diabetes Tipo 1 en adolescentes latinos. El objetivo de este estudio es ayudar a los adolescentes latinos a manejar su diabetes tipo 1 ofreciéndoles herramientas culturalmente sensibles que generen conocimiento y faciliten la autoeficacia y la planificación.
Cuando:
Comenzará en diciembre de 2023.
Estamos buscando:
- 30 adolescentes latinos (12-20 años) con diabetes tipo 1 atendidos en el BDC.
- Cuidadores que habitualmente o siempre miden o administran insulina.
Inclusión:
- Pacientes atendidos en el BDC, con diagnóstico de diabetes tipo 1, y sus cuidadores.
- Paciente de 12 a 20 años en el momento del reclutamiento.
- Latino / Hispano
- Padres o cuidadores que hablan español y/o bilingües
Tener acceso y poder operar un teléfono inteligente o tableta.
- Voluntad de la familia para participar en un estudio clínico y asistir a visitas en un sitio de estudio.
Exclusión:
- Pacientes atendidos en BDC con diagnósticos distintos de diabetes tipo 1 (por ejemplo, MODY, tipo 2, diabetes inducida por medicamentos, formas genéticas de diabetes)
- Pacientes sin acceso y/o capacidad de utilizar la tecnología necesaria para acceder a la aplicación.
- Trastorno significativo del desarrollo o cognitivo en el paciente.
- Enfermedad mental significativa en el padre/tutor que interferiría con la capacidad de dar consentimiento o participar.
- No comprender los requisitos del estudio.
