Protecting hospital capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic requires decreasing illness severity in patients with COVID-19 who are on the borderline of needing hospitalization so that they might be treated at home. Dr. Ginde played a major role in the design and oversight of a large trial testing whether IV Remdesivir (an inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 that is used in hospitalized patients) might prevent subsequent hospitalization for high-risk patients with COVID-19.

Results, recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, show that Remdesivir reduced the chances for hospitalization by nearly 90% (about 22 courses of Remdesivir required to prevent 1 hospitalization).
