Our Approach

Vision

Create a future without firearm-related injuries, deaths, or other harms.

Mission

To use collaboration, education, and research to prevent all types of firearm-related injuries and deaths in our homes and communities.

Core Areas

The Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative strives to coordinate, synergize, and stimulate effective, innovative approaches to firearm injury prevention in Colorado and across the U.S. through:

  • Collaboration: Partnership and engagement with impacted communities and those with lived experiences optimizes identification and impact of effective, acceptable solutions. Additionally, realizing our vision of a future with zero firearm-related injuries or deaths is only possible through the development of diverse networks of collaborators.
  • Research: Action-oriented, innovative research, including evaluation, supports the development and dissemination of effective, acceptable approaches to firearm injury and violence prevention.
  • Education: Outstanding education is needed to disseminate promising, effective approaches among affected communities, policy makers, front-line gatekeepers, and the public. Education and mentorship also strengthen and expands the next generation of firearm-injury prevention researchers, practitioners, and professionals.

Individual faculty members affiliated with the Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative receive research funding from a variety of federal and state agencies and philanthropic foundations. These funds support research and evaluation projects conducted by our faculty but do not support nor influence the initiative as a whole.
