Sensory Feedback

Weir Biomechatronics Development Laboratory

Upper Limb Prosthetic Sensory Feedback

There are 3 main types of sensory receptors in the body - mechanoreceptors, nociceptors, and proprioceptors, which relay information such as touch, pain, and the body's location in 3D space to the brain. The act of relaying sensory information to the user about the environment or objects the prosthesis is interacting with is referred to as sensory feedback. In our research, we aim to use optogenetics and external sensors to target these receptors to return sensory feedback to prosthesis users.
