The Research Advancing Practice through Implementation and Dissemination Science (RAPIDS) Program

The Research Advancing Practice through Implementation and Dissemination Science (RAPIDS) Program integrates dissemination and implementation (D&I) science into emergency medicine research and operations using a Learning Health System (LHS) approach. The program focuses on improving the uptake of evidence-based practices in emergency care through rigorous, applied research and systems-level collaboration. RAPIDS collaborates with clinical operations, research faculty and staff, and interdisciplinary academic partners.

RAPIDS supports emergency medicine research projects through qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, project development and coordination across departments, grant submission support, and manuscript preparation and data analysis.

The program's joint research and clinical operations goals are to:

  1. Promote and support research collaborations and traditional academic productivity
  2. Improve clinical and operational metrics by translating research findings into practice

The program is currently funded through the Department of Emergency Medicine with internal department funds with plans for future expansion and diversification of funding sources.

Research & Initiatives

As of May 2026, RAPIDS is actively supporting 4 ongoing learning health systems research projects:

  • Clinical Decision Support Using HIV Screening Improves Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Initiation in the Emergency Department: Evaluates whether clinical decision support tied to HIV screening increases PrEP initiation rates in the ED.
  • POCUS Documentation and Billing Optimization: Implements a simplified POCUS order and documentation workflow, with in-basket reminders, to improve documentation completeness and increase billing capture.
  • Ambient AI Scribe Implementation: Assesses the impact of Ambient AI scribe tools in the ED using pre/post provider surveys supplemented by EHR data analysis.
  • Antibiotic Stewardship for Acute Uncomplicated Sigmoid Diverticulitis (AUSD): Develops and evaluates an ED clinical education pathway to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in AUSD patients
Planned customer discovery interviews (summer 2026) to assess jobs, pains, and gains and inform value propositions for learning health system research in Emergency Medicine and partnering departments
