Goldberg Lab

Mission: To advance healthy aging through effective clinical interventions and technology enabled approaches together with academic, government, and industry partners.

Vision: To extend the health span of people in our community and the world.

Values:
  • Collaborate with the communities we serve
  • Promote equitable healthcare free of ageism, racism, and other forms of bias and discrimination
  • Lead in biomedical research by addressing barriers that make the health system difficult to access or inefficient in delivering high-quality care
  • Encourage and mentor junior scientists and clinicians to lead in this work
Research: Our lab focuses on improving the health and wellbeing of older adults who seek emergency care. We have developed and tested fall prevention interventions, examined the feasibility of digital health solutions such as apps, ingestible sensors, and wearables for medication adherence and vaccine uptake, and studied novel ways to improve healthcare delivery through telehealth. We also conduct research to improve care for older adults with cognitive impairment, including dementia, particularly around care transitions and support for patients and their caregivers. Our work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Administration for Community Living (US Department of Health & Human Services), payors, foundations, and technology companies.

GAPcareAD: A Brief Emergency Department Intervention to Address Post-Fall Care Needs of Persons Living with Dementia and Care Partners
DescriptionThis multi-site randomized controlled trial will compare the GAPcareAD (intervention) to usual care for persons living with dementia. GAPcareAD is an ED-initiated, caregiver-inclusive intervention designed to address fall risk at the point of care. The intervention includes pharmacist- and physical therapist-led assessments, targeted modification of fall risk factors, and coordinated communication of fall prevention plans with caregivers and care teams. This study aims to determine whether a pragmatic, ED-based intervention can reduce fall-related healthcare utilization and improve patient and caregiver outcomes.
