Brief Program Description

The University of Colorado Cardiovascular Disease training program works diligently to prepare trainees for careers as academic thought leaders.  To achieve this, we provide exposure to and engagement with all aspects of contemporary cardiology at three complementary clinical sites:  University of Colorado Hospital, Rocky Mountain VA Hospital and Denver Health.  The clinical experience includes not only engagement with a diverse and complex patient populations but also exposure to cutting edge tertiary and quaternary cardiac care, including advanced heart failure and transplantation, adult congenital heart disease, complex structural and peripheral vascular interventions, contemporary electrophysiology and advanced imaging modalities. 

Our clinical and procedural volumes are robust at all three sites allowing ample opportunity for fellows to acquire comprehensive procedural skills during their training.  This clinical exposure is complemented by a rich didactic program that includes not only the ACGME mandated core curriculum but also conferences structured around contemporary translational, clinical and health services research, including an annual grand rounds program that welcomes national thought leaders to the campus and encourages them to interact with trainees.  In addition, there is an expectation that all fellows engage in meaningful scholarship during their three years of conventional fellowship training as we believe this to be an essential element of training and one which encourages involvement with the larger community of academic cardiologists.  We have developed an active and engaged mentoring process to help the fellows find effective mentors who can guide this discovery process and ensure their success.
