Our mission is to advance the understanding of cardiovascular disease, accelerate scientific discovery, and translate innovative research into better treatments and improved outcomes for patients.
The University of Colorado Division of Cardiology is committed to advancing cardiovascular health through innovative basic science and translational research. Our investigators focus on understanding the molecular, cellular, and genetic mechanisms underlying diseases of the heart and blood vessels, with the ultimate goal of translating scientific discoveries into new therapies that improve patient outcomes.
A major focus of our research is heart failure, a complex and progressive condition affecting millions of Americans. Our multidisciplinary team of basic scientists and physician-scientists works collaboratively to uncover the biological processes that contribute to heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases, identifying new opportunities for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Our research programs investigate the molecular signaling pathways and gene regulatory mechanisms responsible for the electrical, mechanical, and cellular changes that contribute to cardiovascular disease. By combining fundamental discoveries with clinical insights, our investigators seek to identify promising therapeutic targets and accelerate the development of novel treatments.
Using advanced genetic, cellular, molecular, and physiological approaches, our research explores a broad range of biological mechanisms, including:
Our investigators leverage cutting-edge technologies and research resources, including human cardiac tissue repositories, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models, CRISPR gene-editing technologies, advanced omics approaches, and myofibril mechanics. These capabilities, combined with established experimental models, allow our researchers to investigate cardiovascular disease from the molecular level to the whole organism.
Education and mentorship are central to our research mission. The Division provides an intellectually stimulating and collaborative environment for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career investigators interested in cardiovascular biology and translational medicine.
Through access to advanced technologies, experienced mentors, and interdisciplinary research opportunities, trainees gain the knowledge and skills needed to become future leaders in cardiovascular research.
